The group of University students from Machinga yesterday wrote a letter to the Ministry of Education Science and Technology (MoEST) asking a further clarification on the project underway at Liwonde, termed Machinga District Secondary School.
On 18th July, 2014, University Students Association of Machinga (USAM) petitioned MoEST on the need of a boarding secondary school in Machinga. The Ministry, on 4th August, responded to the petition citing that the government will construct one. Up to date, nothing tangible is happening on the ground and what is being constructed is a mere CDSS and not a boarding SS.
Considering the standard of education in Machinga, USAM felt that lacking a boarding SS is a contributing factor to poor education standard in the district.
The letter, amongst others, asks the government to:
1. To make a public statement to clarify the nature of the project underway.
2. If the government fails to complete the project by the end of this academic year, come 2015/16 academic year, Machinga TTC will be closed temporarily and opened as a district SS until such a time when the boarding SS is constructed.
The letter has been copied to:
-Parliamentary Committee on Education
-DEM (Machinga)
-DC (Machinga)
Further Clarification on the contents of the letter and what the student’s grievances are can be obtained by emailing usam.org2013@gmail.com
