MZUZU (iReport): The country’s most disgruntled political groupings the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and the People’s Party (PP) have on Monday organized riot demonstrations with some students belonging to Mzuzu University (Mzuni), we can reveal.
The riots follow a Mzuni campus visit by MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila and PP Vice President Kamlepo Kalua who drove to the institution after their unsuccessful efforts to remove the government of President Peter Mutharika by crooked means through the Public Affairs Committee.
Kamlepo Kalua and Jessie Kabwila representatives of the most frustrated MCP and PP are using services of a Mzuzu University grouping that they have christened the Mzuzu Youth Association.
When the duo visited the University campus on Saturday, apart from meeting the youth representatives they also met Harris Kanyelemuka who has been left with the responsibility of ensuring that the demonstration happen on Monday.
According to instructions given by the MCP and PP to the Mzuni students, they should demonstrate at any cost on Monday demanding answers on what they call the country’s food shortage crisis.
Kabwila herself a former academician told the students to ensure that they demand answers from the authorities through their demonstrations on Monday.
In his address to the youth representatives, Kamlepo Kalua told the students to shed their blood through the demonstration on Monday.
“You may have heard me recently announcing to the public that I was trained to kill, why not you? Please ensure that on your way from the demonstration stone any vehicle you may see in Mzuzu and loot the shops so that there is a lot of impact from the demos,” Kalua told a hand few students on Saturday.
OFFICIAL STUDENTS UNION POURS COLD WATER ON DEMOS
Meanwhile, the officially recognized students union at Mzuni has distanced itself from the demos planned by the MCP of Lazarous Chakwera and PP of Joyce Banda.
The students have told off the two political parties that they can go and arrange the demonstrations that may end up in loss of life and property with members of their families.
Mzuni Students’ Union President Wazamazama Katatu said in an exclusive interview that the body received an invitation from the organizers but they had reservations in taking part because the protests’ agenda was not clear.
“We told them off because apart from the fact that the agenda is not clear, we are preoccupied with making sure that our library that was razed down by fire recently is back functioning, hence we cannot find time to be on the streets,” said Katatu.
He added: “It does not make sense to join protests that we were not involved in planning stages.” The academia’s reservations also put to light the little grasp of issues that the demo organizers have on national issues. The issues that are taking them to the street are already being handled by various stakeholders led by government. Just this week, government has repeatedly informed Malawians that it has 50,000 metric tonnes of maize which is more than what Malawians require this whole year even during lean periods.
“We are therefore not part of the impending demonstrations organized by government critics,” stressed Katatu.
During the recently concluded PAC meeting in Blantyre, one of the organizers of the demos, Harris Kanyelemuka, sent delegates into stitches after suggesting that Minister of Finance Goodall Gondwe should consider sharing the K940 billion national budget equally to all the citizens, claiming this is the best way to empower each and every citizen.
The “silly and naïve “suggestion ignited elderly delegates to question the youth’s readiness to govern if that was the reflection of their reasoning.
The MCP of Lazarous Chakwera is known in Malawi and beyond as a party of darkness where for 31 years, the party killed its citizens willy-nilly and ever since, Malawians have refused to vote it back into power.
The PP of Joyce Banda was a party that was in power for two years only by accident however it succeeded in stealing all the taxpayers’ money through public theft known as Cashgate. The main beneficially of the Cashgate money and the initiator, Joyce Banda fled the country one and half years ago. She is now hiding in South Africa and many overseas countries including USA and the UK.
