Airtel Malawi on Friday Commissioned a 2G Tower at Dickson Trading Centre in the area of traditional Authority Masula in Lilongwe.

Airtel Zone Business Manager, Pangani Msosa told journalist that Airtel decided to commission the tower after noting that the area was facing eminent and erratic shortage of strong network.

Pangani said Airtel has invested quite a lot in broaden their broadband.

Traditional Authority Masula has since applauded Airtel for the tower “We were using upland sites to access network but now we are happy that Airtel has done us proud,”

Currently, Airtel has 101 towers in the Central region these are for both 3G and 2G network. Many enterprises today use 3G mobile handsets, smartphones and 3G-enabled laptops to improve the mobility and efficiency of their workforces.

These in Malawi are blossoming following the convenience afforded by these devices that has quickly made anytime,

anywhere multimedia communications an integral part of everyday life. Many business users increasingly rely on their mobile devices even when they are in the office often accessing e-mail and other crucial information needed to conduct business.

Unfortunately, many business subscribers cannot make simple voice calls or access mobile data services while at work,
due to erratic and coverage limitations which include overpriced tariffs.

Recent surveys show that over 60 percent of mobile subscribers complain about poor service in the workplace, and this problem is going to get worse as 3G data usage increases among business users.

How to provide cost-effective in-building business coverage has always been a challenge for mobile service providers.

Penetrating buildings from the outside is difficult because signal strength significantly decreases when travelling through the walls and windows. This leads to poor voice and data service quality.

Akimu Banda is a business resident at Dickson Trading Centre.  “Am happy that Airtel is here now let me just take this opportunity to commend them for the effort made.”

Analysts argue that communications systems require trained personnel that can install and integrate equipment to bring it into working service this applies across a wide range of areas such as: power systems, base stations and transmission equipment.
