The Blantyre City Council is pleased to inform the public that some developers whose structures were marked with a red star have started demolition.
This has happened as the period for voluntary demolition of dilapidated buildings is coming to an end on 29th February 2016.
The Council is urging those that have not taken action to do so immediately. The Council is also appealing to developers that have drawn action plans to bring them forward for a roundtable discussion.
Blantyer City Council is threatening that Red Star will be implemented without failure. This is policy implemented to cure dilapidated housing that pause dangers to people and inhabitants in the city.
Malawi President Peter Mutharika in February last year inaugurated the Red Star Campaign that would see some buildings in Blantyre City being pulled down completely and others being renovated in a bid to make the city beautiful and meet international standards.
BCC through the Red Star Campaign, has earmarked 161 buildings for demolition in central business districts of Limbe and Blantyre.
The process has not been easy as the Council had to fight a court order stopping the demolition of buildings belonging to 54 business persons mostly in Limbe Central Business District.
