LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Brian Banda has been appointed as the new Director General of the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), according to reports circulating in Malawian media.
The appointment is expected to take effect on Monday, March 16, 2026, with Banda set to serve a three-year contract.
Banda, a seasoned broadcaster, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously worked with Times Group and served as Press Secretary to former President Lazarus Chakwera.
His appointment comes at a critical time for MBC, which has been embroiled in controversy following the dismissal of former Director General George Kasakula.
Kasakula was summarily dismissed by the MBC board in February 2026 for alleged “gross misconduct” and was subsequently arrested by fiscal police on March 11, 2026, over financial mismanagement allegations.
The move has raised questions about the governance and independence of the national broadcaster.
The MBC Board of Directors has confirmed Banda’s appointment, although an official announcement is yet to be made.
The appointment has been met with interest, given Banda’s background and experience in the media sector.
The Malawi Broadcasting Corporation is a state-owned enterprise, mandated to inform, educate, and entertain the public.
Its leadership has often come under scrutiny for alleged political bias, making Banda’s appointment a significant development in the country’s media landscape.
