LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Bwaira Hospital’s Fistula Center is reportedly rescuing 50 women monthly from the disease.
This was revealed on Thursday during World Fistula Day commemoration which falls on May 23 yearly.
Bwaira Fistula Center Coordinator Magret Moyo said the center is being championed by Fistula survivors who have become the ambassador to the rural masses.
Moyo said after the patients recover they are provided with resources like of solar panels , technical trainings and business skills.
She added that Fistula which comes during child birth is curable and those that are in need should come and seek the care.
In her remarks, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Regional Director for East and Southern Africa Lydia Zigomo said her organization is assisting Malawi government through ministry of health with funding for the care of the fistula patients.
“We are raising awareness to the general public in collaboration with the Ministry of Health to help Fistula patients country wide,” said Zigomo.
Director for Safe Motherhood in the Ministry, Doreen Ali said the visit by the UNFPA Regional Director is a plus to the facility as she has witness the loopholes of the center.
Speaking to one of the fistula survivors, Betina Mabwera disclosed that she stayed with fistula for 31 years.
Mabwera disclosed that after recovery from the disease she was employed to the center as a Cleaner.
She has therefore brought 68 patients to the clinic as an ambassador.
Meanwhile the center has 43 patients.
This year’s Fistula Day is commemorated under a theme, “Breaking the cycle preventing Fistula worldwide”.
