LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-COSAFA in conjunction with Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has organised an U16 tournament for both boys and girls which used the newly introduced rules some of which were; if a player scores outside the 18, it counts for 2 goals and if scoring out side the 18 and the whole attacking team is in the opponent’s half counts for 4 goals.
This is one of the legacy events at the COSAFA Under 17 Boys and Girls Championships which will be staged in Lilongwe from December 1-11 as part of the AUSC Region 5 Youth Games),
Mark Fish, the former Bafana Bafana international (who is also the custodian of the fast footie football rules) was in attendance to make sure that the fast footie rules are well introduced to young ones.
Fish said he was excited to come to Malawi and that he has seen plenty of good young talent.
Fish said the aim is to change the game, make it quicker and faster and encourage the kids to shoot and make them aware how the game should be. It is about scoring goals and make sure the kids have fun.
“As Cosafa region we can improve our game and make sure that more teams qualify for AFCON and World Cup tournaments,” he added.
Gomezgani Zakazaka, FAM’s Competitions and Communication Director said FAM is very much happy to have COSAFA shoulder them to host this tournament which has helped Malawi to identity some young talent in Lilongwe.
The tournament was held at Bishop Mackenzie from Saturday 26 to Sunday 27 November, 2022.
Both sections had 8 teams from Lilongwe and they played on knock out basis.
Ascent Academy emerged the champions in girls’ tournament after beating Hungry Lions 3 nil through post match penalties after a 6 all draw, and Soccer Pirates won the boys’ section after beating Ticktack FC 6 nil in the final match.
All 16 participating teams have received a set of uniform and medals while Champions for both sections got a cup, and individual awardees received balls plus miniatures.
