LILONGWE (MaraviPost)-Minister of Homeland Security Dr Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma on Saturday honored his pledge to donate his March salary to grave diggers (adzukulu) who helped burrying 28 people who died in Cyclone Freddy in Chilobwe, Blantyre.
Ng’oma made the MK1. 5 million donation March at Naotcha Primary School camp in Blantyre.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Ng’oma said that decided to make the donation to recognize the great role the grave diggers played.
He has also donated picks,hoes and shovels worth MK200,000 to help in removing dead bodies that were trapped in the mud.
The Minister has also pledged to source out assorted items to be channelled toward supporting Cyclone survivors.
“These people did a commendable job, unfortunately they are not being recognized,so I thought of thanking them.
“The state president Dr. Lazarus Chakwera through the ‘Tigwirane Manja’ campaign is very keen to make sure that everyone is taking part in supporting survivors of Cyclone Freddy, “he said.
Receiving the donation, Group Village Head Chilobwe thanked Ng’oma for the gesture saying it will act as a motivation to the grave diggers and other people who worked hard in ensuring that the deceased were buried with dignity.
