KARONGA-(MaraviPost)—Police in Karonga have managed to arrest the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) northern region deputy treasurer Willard Mwangonde after being in hiding for almost a week, for allegedly abducting and defiling a 14 year old girl.

Police have confirmed the development and assured the community and the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) that justice will take its course.

According to the police the arrest follows a tip from the well-wishers.

“We have indeed arrested him, and will appear before the court soon,” said the police.

However, the district’s CSOs that deal with the rights of children are worried if the case will be handled accordingly.

Speaking in an interview, Karonga District Commissioner for Malawi Scout Aaron Mwenelupembe said they suspect something fishy in how the case is being handled.

Maravi Post has established that the suspect deliberately handed himself to the police after managing to mute the concerned parties including the victim’s parents in order to win the case.

The district’s CSOs have however, pledged to make sure that the suspect face the law.

Meanwhile, the concern CSOs have planned to hold protest against the increase of cases of defilement in the district.
