Former Member of Parliament for Chitipa North Constituency, Dr. Webster Kameme, has officially defected to the UTM party.
Dr. Kameme recently lost in the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) primary elections, which may have influenced his decision to switch political allegiance.
He previously served as a lawmaker for Chitipa North from 1999 to 2004, making him a seasoned politician with experience in governance and constituency representation.
His defection was announced publicly at Chitipa Boma during a political rally.
The rally was addressed by UTM President, Dr. Dalitso Kabambe, who is currently campaigning ahead of the September elections.
Dr. Kameme’s move to UTM signals a shift in the political landscape of Chitipa North, as he brings with him a support base that could impact the upcoming elections.
His experience and influence in the constituency could strengthen UTM’s presence in the northern region.
Political analysts believe that his defection may have been driven by dissatisfaction with the MCP primary election process.
Some suggest that losing the primaries might have left him feeling sidelined within the ruling party, prompting him to seek a new political home.
His decision to join UTM aligns with the party’s ongoing strategy to attract influential political figures ahead of the elections.
Dr. Kameme’s presence in UTM could enhance the party’s appeal among voters in Chitipa North and beyond.
As election campaigns intensify, his defection is likely to be a significant talking point in the region’s political discourse.
