BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced a ban on police officers working inside football stadiums during match days.
The decision follows directives from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which prohibits armed police officers from operating within the playing arena.
The measure is aimed at enhancing the safety and comfort of fans, as the visible presence of armed security personnel inside the stadium can create fear and tension among spectators.
FAM noted that while police officers play a vital role in ensuring security during sporting events, their presence in large numbers inside the stadium can hinder swift responses in case of violent incidents.
This is because heavily armed officers within the pitch area may unintentionally escalate tensions rather than reduce them.
Instead, security operations will be strategically positioned outside the pitch perimeter, with stewards and other unarmed safety personnel handling order inside the stadium.
FAM emphasized that the change is in line with international football safety standards, ensuring that Malawian football matches remain safe, enjoyable, and free from unnecessary intimidation for fans.
