Foreign Affairs Ministry disappointed with Malawians going back to RSA amid Covid-19

Deportation of Malawians from South Africa

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation says it is disappointed with some Malawians who were recently repatriated from the Republic of South Africa (RSA) and are now returning to the same country through uncharted routes.

In a press statement issued on Friday, the ministry says according to reports it has received from Malawi Missions in Mozambique and Zimbabwe, more Malawians are currently being intercepted in the two countries on their way to other countries; particularly the rainbow nation.

The ministry further expresses serious concerns that while it spent more resources to repatriate the said nationals, some are still defying the gesture by returning to South Africa using their own routes.

However, commenting on the development, Mwanza Border Post, Spokesperson, Pasquale Zulu, said whoever is caught going back to the said country without proper documents will face the law.

“So, my special appeal is that we should join hands as patriotic Malawians because government is spending a lot of money to return these people back into this country plus fulfilling some other issues like clearance whereby if these people do not have proper documents, then government has to come in. So, we warn them that once they are caught, the long arm of the law will take its course,” said Zulu.

Since the eruption of Covid-19 pandemic around the globe, most Malawians have been returning from other countries, particularly South Africa and others are still in deplorable situations due to long lockdown observed in that country coupled with dismissals from their jobs
