The Government of Malawi has commended the United States for its unwavering support towards the country’s development agenda.
This recognition was made by Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo during the commemoration of the 249th United States National Independence Day held in Lilongwe on Thursday.
Tembo highlighted that the United States has been a reliable partner in supporting Malawi through various sectors, including education, health, agriculture, and security.
She emphasized that the bilateral relationship between Malawi and the United States, which dates back to 1964, has remained strong and mutually beneficial for both nations.
The Foreign Affairs Minister noted that this long-standing partnership continues to yield significant results that are transforming the lives of many Malawians.
Speaking at the same event, Chief of Mission for the U.S. Embassy in Malawi, Amy Diaz, called for unity among Malawians as the country prepares for the upcoming general elections.
Diaz urged citizens to shun political violence and maintain peace as they exercise their democratic rights.
She underscored the importance of conducting free, fair, and credible elections, stating that the United States holds high expectations for Malawi to uphold democratic values.
Diaz also reiterated her government’s commitment to supporting Malawi in its fight against corruption.
She expressed optimism that joint efforts between Malawi and the United States will help root out corruption and improve transparency in governance.
This year’s celebration was held under the theme “The Stories We Tell.”
According to the U.S. Embassy in Malawi, the theme celebrates the powerful role of storytelling in shaping culture, traditions, and shared values.
The event brought together government officials, diplomats, development partners, and members of the public in an atmosphere of reflection and celebration.
It served not only as a platform to commemorate U.S. independence but also to reaffirm the enduring ties between Malawi and the United States.
