LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Former Immigration Chief Brigadier Charles Kalumo is seeking court intervention to access medical attention after being detained by police.

Kalumo’s lawyer, Chrispin Ndalama, claims authorities are delaying his release, with Fiscal Police and Area 18 Police shifting responsibility to each other.

Kalumo, who suffered a minor stroke affecting his eye, had traveled to South Africa for treatment and was advised to see a doctor immediately upon returning to Malawi.

However, he has not received medical attention, experiencing numbness in his face.

Ndalama emphasizes that access to healthcare is a human right, stating, “He must be allowed to receive medical attention regardless of whether he is guilty or not”.

Kalumo was arrested at Kamuzu International Airport upon returning from South Africa, reportedly over abuse of office allegations dating back to June 2023.

Police spokesperson Lael Chimtembo has not responded to requests for comment.
