Fraudster goes away with millions of kwachas

Fraudster has syphoned millions of kwachas from desperate parents in Karonga and Chitipa the northern border districts of Malawi, Maravi Post can reveal.According to information sourced by Maravi Post, the fraudster identified as Thomas Nyirenda from Ekwendeni has been deceiving the Karonga and Chitipa community that he has sourced funds to send community secondary school students and those who cannot managed to pay school fees to private boarding schools.

The said private boarding schools include Phwezi, Lidoma and Tukombo.

Nyirenda then asked the concerned parents to pay K35, 000 each as registration fee and that other expenses will be done by himself apart from transport of their children

“He told us that he has already discussed everything with the officials of the three private secondary schools and that the students should just go,” said one of the concerned parents, Mathews Mkandawire.

However, officials of the three named private secondary schools surprised the said students when they chased them, a development which raised suspicion.

“We tried to call the number of Mr Nyirenda to ask him why our children have been sent back from school but his mobile phone was out of reach,” Mkandawire revealed.

Karonga district education manager Scotch Kondowe said his office is aware of the development but said the suspect or parents did not approach his office for advise or verification.

However, Maravi Post understand that the suspect was among the two who were arrested in Mzuzu last year over the same case but was later given a bail.

Meanwhile, the police have launched a man hunt for the suspect.
