KABUDULA, LILONGWE (Maravi Post)—Malawi Minister of Local government and rural development Kondwani Nankhumwa has asked President Peter Mutharika to pay Christmas packages to traditional leaders in order to let them enjoy with their families. The minister made his call on Saturday during the elevation of senior chief Kabudula in Lilongwe.
Speaking during the meeting, Nankhumwa told Mutharika that this is what was happening in the past.
“As we are celebrating the elevation of senior chief Kabudula, allow me to remind you our President to remember to give Christmas packages to our traditional leaders as in the past,” said Nankhumwa.
“I know that this has been happening before my coming to this ministry, I therefore ask you to do it again,” he requested.
He then asked the chiefs to support the government of the day and desist themselves from being used by oppositions.
However, some political analysts have condemned the Minister’s remarks saying its unfortunate.
According to them, the Minister should not be on fore front advising the President to misuse the public funds in such issues while Malawians are suffering with hunger.
They also argued that such kind of malpractice is part of bribing the chiefs especially to let them support each and every decision made by government.
Last year, Mutharika was accused of handing out huge amount of money to some journalists who attended meeting at Sanjika Palace as some said that it was part of muting reporters.

Does Nankhumwa want the Muslim chiefs to also receive a package at Christmas, or is he proposing another day for them?
