Zeinab Badawi of the BBC speaks to President Peter Mutharika of Malawi on the popular Hardtalk program. Malawi according to BBC and western Media is said to be the world’s poorest country, with a list of problems ranging from poor nutrition and a crippling lack of electricity to international concerns about corruption in the political system.
Despite relative peace and political stability, Malawi is struggling to make progress. So how much of its failures are down to bad government. Badawi in a no holds interview pushed the Malawi President who stood his ground defending the actions he has undertaken to date to cure corruption.
The BBC reporter cornered Peter Mutharika on poor governance as the main cause of the state the country finds itself in. The reporter also blamed Bingu WA Mutharika for poor Governance which included purchase of a presidential jet.
Peter Mutharika defended his brother and hinted that his Government was actively investigating the Sale of the Jet by Joyce Banda. The President also faulted the Donors for withholding budgetary support as it was punishing the wrong people and causing more misery for Malawians.
When the Interviewer used Nyasatimes to support her questioning, Peter Mutharika told BBC not to trust Nyasatimes and says he seriously doubts the reporter Peter Kaunda does exist as a real person for the Publication. He showed his disdain for the Publication and said he did not want to elaborate why he did not trust Nyasatimes.
