BLANTYRE-(MaraviPos)-Human rights activist and leader of the Concerned Citizens of Malawi, Edward Kambanje, has called on government to investigate the sugar shortage and price hikes in the country.
In an interview with Maravi Post,Kambanje claimed that the issue is not due to a lack of production capacity but rather the prioritization of exports over local distribution.
He alleged that the sugar supply chain in the country is flawed and that relevant authorities need to probe the production and distribution processes.
“We need to know how much the manufacturer is producing, how much is allocated to each distributor and wholesaler, and how much is being released to the general public,” said Kambanje.
The activist blamed weak governance for the economic instability and skyrocketing prices of commodities, including maize.
He further critized the government for its silence on the matter and urged authorities to provide an explanation to the nation on the causes of the problem and the measures being taken to fix it.
“The people need to know what is wrong and what the government is doing to address it,” he said.
Kambanje however, called for policy reforms, investment in diversified production, and strong consumer protection frameworks to address the issue.
