NAIROBI-(MaraviPost)-Kenya Coast Guard Service has torched 70 sacks of miraa worth an approximate value of Ksh25 million as part of efforts to fight the spread of Covid-19.

Reports have indicated that Kenya Navy officers patrolling the Indian Ocean nabbed the illegal consignment that was smuggled to Somalia.

They however handed the consignment over to the Kenya Coast Guard Service who then set it ablaze at Kitau beach on the Manda Island.

The popular herbal that is believed to increase energy, deepen focus and suppress appetite was banned last month from being exported because it is picked and moved by hand and Authorities believe it could be a possible vector for coronavirus.

In other reports by Pulse Kenya, it has however been revealed that the Kenyan miraa is still illegally brought to Mogadishu by skiffs from the coastal town of Kismayu despite the ban and authorized have expressed concerns on the risk that it is posing on the lives of Kenyans amid the coronavirus pandemic.
