BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Minister of Local Government, Blessings Chinsinga, has commended Lilongwe Ecological Corridor Initiative (LECI) for embracing ownership of environmental projects that can transform the country positively.

Chinsinga made the remarks recently during a tour through the initiative implemented along Lingadzi river in the Malawi’s capital city, Lilongwe.

“Let’s use Lilongwe Ecological Corridor Initiative to understand how the speed and depth of environmental projects. LECI is best environmental laboratory with all the available needed resources.

“I recommend the initiative as the best that Malawians can learn from and understand the importance of ownership of environmental projects ,” said Chinsinga.

The Minister urged Lilongwe City Council to accelerate the pace of the project by setting the targets, making comprehensive plans and budget while working as a team.

Chinsinga also asked the council to consider having its own town hall to accommodate engagement meetings with stakeholders adding that his vision is to bring world class smart, sustainable and livable cities in the country.

According to Lilongwe City Mayor Councillor Richard Banda, the LECI is striving to address the issues of deforestation land water resources degradation which among other results will boost tourism and reduce disasters in the city.

He added that the initiative will strengthen the sustainable natural resources management and environmental protection while promoting access to nature for all, and stimulate a green economy.

The corridor cuts through the heart of Lilongwe following the Lingadzi and Lilongwe riverline ecosystem to connect key sites of biological importance.
