MASHONALAND-(MaraviPost)-A 54-year-old man allegedly raped his 13-year old niece who brought food to his room while he was ill in Mashonaland East province.

Provincial police spokesperson Simon Chazovachii confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday, May 18.

According to Chazovachii, the man from Chief Neshangwe, Chikomba district raped his niece when she was sent to serve food to the ill man by her mother.

The suspect then took a machete under his bed and threatened to kill the victim if she reported the matter, Newsday reported.

However, the minor disclosed the incident to her mother after returning home who then reported the matter to police.

Meanwhile, Police are appealing for information on the whereabouts of the suspect in connection with a rape case.

They have also urged members of the public to quickly report rape cases so that victims can be quickly assisted with treatment.

This comes amid increased cases of rape in the country. In February this year, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) expressed concerns over the high number of rape cases amid indications that most such crimes are being perpetrated by guardians in charge of minors.

Previous report by Zimbabwe Gender Commission revealed that 22 women are raped daily in the country, one every 75 minutes.

The report also indicated that on average, 646 women are sexually abused monthly, with one in three girls raped or sexually assaulted before they reach the age of 18.
