LILONGWE, April 16, 2016, (MaraviPost): A Malawi court in the border district of Mwanza on Friday, April 15 jailed a 32 year old man to three years with hard labor for hacking his wife.

Mwanza Police Station Public Relations Officer Edward Kaunda confirmed to The Maravi Post the sentencing of Leymond Lirani who committed the offense of grievous harm which is contrary to section 238 of the penal code.

According to Publicist Kaunda, the court heard that on March 29, this year the convict’s wife- Folonica Victor asked Leymond for some money to buy relish for the family but the husband did not provide any rather went out for local beer called Kachasu (Local Malawi Product looks like Russian Vodka) and came back home drunk which did not please the wife.

Kaunda said that two days later, the wife asked the convict the same money but she was told that the wife must not be bothering asking for money saying Leymond works alone for a living hence no need for the wife asking more. The response angered the victim-wife who replied that she was going to get another man since the latter was failing his duties as a husband.

“This again didn’t go well with the convict who went to his brother’s house where he took a lot of Kachasu. However, upon coming back at night, Leymond found the wife asleep then he picked a panga knife and hacked Folonica on the head for several times. And it had to take the intervention of well-wisher carrying the victim to Mwanza District Hospital for medication.

“Consequently, Lirani was arrested on the same day and on April 4, 2016 appeared before Mwanza First Grade Magistrate Court where he pleaded guilty to the charge of Grievous Harm which is contrary to section 238 of the penal code but His worship Ran well Mangazi didn’t give the sentence on the same day as the victim was still in Hospital.

“Folonica was discharge on April 13 and April 15 the case was called again in court when state witness- prosecutor Sub/Inspector Jane Juma pleaded with court to punish Leymond so that other irresponsible men in the country should learn from him. Therefore, His worship Mangazi sentenced Lirani to three years with hard labour”, explains Kaunda.

Leymond Lirani who has been in marriage with Folonica for six years hails Mpandason village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Nthache in the border and southern district of Mwanza…
