Chisale ordered to pay MK10 million

According to the Assistant Registrar, Brian Sambo, Chisale is expected to pay K3.5 million assault damages and MK6.5 million for punitive charges within 14 days after the judgment.

Chisale was found guilty by the High Court Judge William Msiska for assaulting Soko when the two had a quarrel at the roundabout which connects Mzimba and Paul Kagame Highway in Lilongwe.

The court heard that Chisale, who was the then Mutharika’s bodyguard, assaulted Soko on November 22, 2018 at his office after Soko courteously expressed his disapproval of Chisale’s reckless driving after he entered into the roundabout in violation of the Soko’s right of way.

Chisale reportedly followed Soko to his office in Area 47/2/377 after the encounter and threatened him with a gun before Soko was unlawfully detained by police from Lingadzi Police Station for over three hours and later released at the direction of Chisale.

Following the verdict, Sambo condemned Chisale for conducting himself in a manner that calls for aggravated and punitive damages.

He has urged public office bearers to demonstrate professionalism in their course of work and treat all people equally irrespective of their positions in the societies.

Chisale has been on the wrong side of the law for a number of times since the change of administration in 2020. He was firstly arrested on charges of fraud and money laundering relating to the importation of free duty cement worth K5 billion before he was later re-arrested for the attempted murder of a woman in Blantyre.

In August 2020, Police rearrested Chisale for allegedly using a fake certificate to join the Malawi Defence shortly after his release from Chichiri Prison on bail.

As if that wasn’t enough, the famed personal bodyguard to the former president was also arrested for the murder of Issa Njauju, a senior Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Officer who was gruesomely murdered several years ago.

Meanwhile, Chisale’s lawyer Chancy Gondwe has disclosed that he has received instructions from his client to appeal the court’s decision.
