Malawi FA, FLA plan nationwide tribute for Black Mamba Kanyenda

Esau Kanyenda honoured in dual-city memorial

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Football Association of Malawi (FAM), in collaboration with the Football Legends Association (FLA), has announced arrangements that will allow football supporters and Malawians at large to take part in the burial ceremony of the late Esau “Black Mamba” Kanyenda.

Kanyenda, one of Malawi’s most celebrated former footballers, passed away on December 2 last year, leaving the nation in mourning and the football fraternity reflecting on his immense contribution to the game.

According to the programme released by FAM, the burial of the former Flames striker will take place on February 4, 2026, in Manchester, United Kingdom, starting at 2:00pm local time.

Recognising that the ceremony will be held outside Malawi, FAM and FLA have put in place measures to ensure that Malawians are not excluded from bidding farewell to the football icon.

As part of the arrangements, football fans and members of the public are being invited to gather at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, where a live video screening of the burial ceremony will be conducted.

The association says the stadium gathering is meant to provide a central place for collective mourning, remembrance and celebration of Kanyenda’s life and achievements.

FAM has further indicated that additional viewing options have been secured for those who may not be able to travel to Lilongwe to attend the stadium screening.

The ceremony will be broadcast live on Mpira TV, allowing supporters across the country to follow proceedings in real time.

In addition, the burial will be streamed on Mpira TV’s official Facebook page, widening access to fans who rely on digital platforms.

FAM says the coordinated coverage reflects the high regard in which Kanyenda is held, both locally and internationally.

The late Black Mamba is remembered for his prolific goal scoring exploits and his role in inspiring a generation of Malawian footballers.
