Malawi Police arrest 41 illegal immigrants in northern region

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Immigration Department in the Northern Region of Malawi in conjunction with the Malawi Police Force have today arrested forty one foreign nationals who entered into the country without travel documents.

The Northern Region Immigration Department Spokesperson Francis Chitambuli has confirmed the news with the press.

According to Chitambuli, among the forty one; thirty are Ethiopians, ten are Pakistans and one is a Bangladesh national.

He added that the illegal immigrants were arrested around Enukweni area in Mzimba while hiding under a plastic cover at the back of a two-tonner lorry, white in colour bearing a registration number BZ 8312 belonging to Jasper Moyo.

The illegal immigrants were coming from Karonga heading to Mzuzu Direction.

Chitambuli also said currently, the driver of the vehicle is on the run while the illegal immigrants who had no travel documents at the time were arrest and they are waiting to appear before court.

They are expected to answer the charges of illegal entry contrary to section 21 subsection 1 of the Malawi Immigration Act.

Meanwhile, the Police have also impounded a two-tonner lorry which was used to ferry the suspects.
