President Arthur Peter Mutharika on Sunday donated K1 million and 100 bags of cement to St. Marks Anglican Church in Mzuzu, to assist in the ongoing project of construction of the church.
The gesture comes at a time the religious institution of the Diocese of Northern Malawi is struggling to finalize construction works of the church. Among the works that are yet to be done are flooring and some other fine works.
Speaking to the congregation of which he was part, Mutharika reminded Malawians that the church contributes significantly to government’s development endeavours and therefore, it also needs to be supported in its projects.
“I am happy to be here at the Anglican Church and I am impressed with the project you are implementing here, especially the magnificent building which is here that will beautify the City of Mzuzu,” he said.
The Malawi Leader added the church needs to take a big role in praying for the country, especially in barbaric killings of people with albinism.
“Of late, there have been gruesome killings and abductions against people with albinism in our country, let’s join hands to pray for these evil things to end,” he said.
He said both the church and the state share a common duty of serving God’s people and that politics and religion are not in contradiction.
On his part, Bishop of Anglican Church in the Diocese of Northern Malawi, Fanuel Magangani, expressed gratitude for the president’s visit to the church and the donation, saying it would boost the church’s construction works.
“As a church, we are happy with your coming and for the donation which you have given to us. Let me assure you Your Excellency that the money will assist in the project we are implementing” said Bishop Magangani.
The head of the church further assured they will continue helping the government to develop the country in different spheres.
