BLANTYRE (Maravipost)–Cashgate convict, Treza Namanthanga Senzani, who was slapped with a three-year jail term, has withdrawn an application for bail pending appeal for her sentence.
The former Secretary for Tourism Ministry has not given any reason for the withdrawal.
She was being represented by lawyer Necton Mhura, who has been appointed Malawi’s Ambassador to the United States.
Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Deputy Director Reyneck Matemba confirmed to have received communication from Senzani’s lawyers that they will not proceed with the application for bail pending appeal.
Matemba said the prosecution had submitted its arguments to the High Court opposing the release of Senzani on bail pending the appeal case.
Senzani, the first to be convicted and sentenced in the infamous cashgate scam, was given nine months jail sentence on theft charge and three years sentence for money laundering charge. The sentences are running concurrently
