In a historic development that promises to transform Malawi’s socio-economic landscape, President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has presided over the signing ceremony of a USD 6.8 billion grant with Bridgin Foundation at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.
This massive injection of funds, equivalent to MK7 trillion, is expected to finance a plethora of mega projects across the country.
The first phase of implementation will witness the construction of several high-impact projects, including:
- A USD 1 billion state-of-the-art teaching hospital in Chileka, Blantyre, which will be established under Kamuzu University of Health Science (KUHeS), with satellite centers in Mangochi, Lilongwe, and Mzuzu.
- A USD 750 million high-tech fertilizer manufacturing plant at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), which will revolutionize the country’s agricultural sector.
- A USD 480 million Inkosi Yamakhosi M’mbelwa University in Mzimba, which will expand access to quality higher education in the northern region.
- A USD 591 million Geology Centre at Mzuzu University, which will enhance the country’s capacity for geological research and exploration.
- A USD 158 million High-Tech lab at Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), which will foster innovation and scientific research.
- A USD 230 million twin tower at Capital Hill to house government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, which will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of public service delivery.
- A 1000 megawatts power generation plant to the tune of USD 3.315 billion, which will significantly boost the country’s power generation capacity and reduce reliance on imports.
This massive investment is expected to have a transformative impact on Malawi’s economy, healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.
The projects will not only create jobs and stimulate economic growth but also improve the quality of life for millions of Malawians.
The signing ceremony marks a significant milestone in the country’s development trajectory, and President Chakwera has expressed his gratitude to Bridgin Foundation for their support.
The President has assured Malawians that his administration will ensure that the funds are utilized efficiently and effectively to achieve the desired development outcomes.
