MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Anti-Corruption Bureau on July, 22 2020 arrested Fanuel Nkhono, former Director of Procurement and Emilias Kandapo, Senior Procurement Officer and on 23 July, 2020, John Kandulu, former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Dr Jean Chifundo Mathanga, former Board Chairperson at ESCOM for allegedly abusing their offices contrary to Section 25 B of the Corrupt Practices Act.
In a press release signed by ACB’s Principal Publication Officer, Egrita Ndala, the bureau says on 21st September, 2016, it received a complaint alleging that the Electricity Supply Company of Malawi (ESCOM) made procurement worth MK4 billion without following proper procedures.
Subsequently, the bureau instituted an investigation which established that there was indeed procurement at ESCOM which was done without following laid down procedures.
While confirming the arrests, Ndala said the four officers will be taken to court after ACB has finalised recording statements from them.
Two weeks ago, Executive Director for ACB, Reyneck Matemba, told the media that due to the regime change, the working environment at the bureau is now more conducive for the bureau to investigate and arrest whosoever committed a crimes in the past but was being shielded by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led government and they will face the law.
