
LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police in the capital Lilongwe are keeping in custody for suspected duping job seeker.
The suspect aged 47 has been identified as Dibious Mphanje who was arrested in in the city Lilongwe on suspicion that he was obtaining money from people on the pretex that he will offer them jobs.
Lilongwe Police Station publicist Hastings Chigalu told the Maravi Post that the suspect used to pose as a Plan Malawi officer.
Mphanje used to visit Nathenje, Kamphata, Areas 22 and 25 among others, recruiting Malawi School Certificate of Education Certificate (MSCE) holders for the same.
“The suspect was telling people that Plan Malawi is recruiting MSCE holders to carry out a Primary School Dropout Survey that will run for three months starting from January, 2022.
“The suspect was arranging a date with the job seekers to meet at NBS Bank, telling them to bring five thousand kwacha each to process their bank accounts,” says Chigalu.
Added police publicist, “Thereafter, he was demanding K7, 000 from each person as money meant for his purported organisation, Plan Malawi. However, on Friday, December 17, 2021 at Area 3 NBS bank, one of the victims became suspicious with the activities involved.
“He tipped-off Lilongwe Police detectives who immediately rushed to the bank and arrested Mphanje.Police established that ten job seekers had already successfully opened their banks accounts. Upon search the suspect was found with K50, 000 (fifty thousand) which he admitted to have been collected from the desperate job seekers who travelled all the way from Nathenje”.
Chigalu disclosed that the suspect was also found with different photocopies of MSCE certificates and National Identity cards among others.
Mphanje, who hails from Kanigo Village, Traditional Authority Mazengera in the district, will appear in court soon to answer a case of Obtaining Money by False Pretence which contravenes Section 319 of the Penal Code.
