KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has launched Lupembe Ward By-Election in Karonga with the call of close collaboration among stakeholders in a bid to ensure peace ahead of the polls set for August 23, 2022.

The sentiments were made on Saturday at Lughali Primary School when the Commission officially launched the by-election which fell vacant in December 2021 following the death of the Ward Councilor Vincent Kayuni.

MEC Commissioner Fabiano

In an interview MEC Commissioner Emmanuel Fabiano, said an election is an important event in a democratic dispensation hence urged the people in the constituency to continue keeping peace and law and order.

Adding, peace is the only way to bring out development in an area unlike squabbles among candidates and followers.

“Unity is the only way meaningful development can be achieved in a nation hence my appeal for peace and co-existence among the different political parties who are contesting in the by-elections,” he said.

Fabiano has since urged aspiring candidates to stick to issue-based campaigns that will attract potential voters in the ward to go to the polls and vote in their large numbers.

In his remarks Chairperson for the Multi-Party Liaison Committee (MPLC) who is also District Commissioner for Karonga Paul Kalilombe, expressed delight in the launch of the election process since the area had no Ward Councilor to represent them at the District Council level.

“The launching of the by-election has also reminded us as stakeholders our import role that we have to play in ensuring that the election process runs smoothly as possible hence my call for support from the political parties and traditional leaders among others because we need them in order to deliver a successful election that the people of Lupembe expect and deserve from us,” he explained.

According to the MEC calendar the campaign period is expected to be closed on August 21 ahead of poles two days later.
