NASHVILLE-(MaraviPost) — Oprah Winfrey’s father, Vernon Winfrey, has died at the age of 89 few days after the richest black woman threw him a surprise barbeque party in Nashville, Tennessee.
Oprah announced the news of her father’s passing in a statement on her official Instagram page.
“Yesterday with family surrounding his bedside I had the sacred honor of witnessing the man responsible for my life, take his last breath,” said Oprah a tribute to her father.
“We could feel Peace enter the room at his passing,” she added.
According to CNN, Oprah held the celebration as a way to give her father his flowers while he was still well enough to smell them.
Before his demise, the army veteran and deacon was well known in Nashville for owning Winfrey Barber & Beauty Shop.
He also served as a member of Nashville’s Metro City Council for 16 years and was a trustee for the Tennessee State University.
On July 4, Oprah threw a surprised party themed “Vernon Winfrey Appreciation Day,” which included a barber chair to honor his long career as a barber and owning his own shop in Nashville for nearly 50 years for her father in Nashville.
During the celebration, the TV mogul Oprah attributed her success to her father who she said taught her great work ethics citing that her dad rarely closed his business for holidays.
The Nashville Mayor John Cooper has shared his deepest condolences to the Winfrey family. He eulogized Vernon as a man who dedicated his life to entrepreneurship, and mentoring young men in the community.
Oprah spent her early childhood at her father’s hometown of Kosciusko, Mississippi, and in Milwaukee with her mother, Vernita Lee.
She also lived with her father in Nashville, between the ages of 7 and 9 and during her teens.
