LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi has issued a strong condemnation of the increasing threats, harassment, and online trolling faced by journalists from politicians and their supporters.
MISA Malawi Chairperson Golden Matonga has called for an end to these attacks, urging political figures and their followers to cease efforts to intimidate and discredit journalists.
The recent focus of these concerns is Times Group reporter Cathy Maulidi, who received threatening messages via WhatsApp from unknown numbers.
The threats followed Maulidi’s coverage of Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule’s statements in Parliament.
Additionally, Maulidi has been subjected to extensive social media trolling related to the same story.
MISA Malawi has condemned these actions as serious violations of press freedom, warning that such behavior promotes self-censorship among journalists and media outlets.
Matonga highlighted that these attacks not only infringe upon the rights of journalists but also undermine the principles of media accountability and professionalism.
The threats against Maulidi have elicited widespread alarm within Malawi’s journalism community, with many voices calling for enhanced protection and support for journalists.
One of the country’s journalists, speaking anonymously, emphasized the fundamental right of journalists to report the truth without fear of retaliation, asserting, “We cannot allow politicians and their supporters to silence us.”
MISA Malawi has called upon the authorities to ensure the safety of journalists and uphold their right to operate without fear.
The organization stresses that press freedom and freedom of expression are crucial pillars of a democratic society, and safeguarding these rights is essential for maintaining a transparent and accountable media landscape.
