“Mwenifumbo’s NDP opens to electoral alliances but ready to go solo”-declares Vice President Mpokosa

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Frank Mwenifumbo’s National Development Party (NDP) has reiterated its openness to forming alliances with opposition parties ahead of the upcoming elections.

But she quick saying the remains fully prepared to contest alone if necessary.

Speaking interview with Maravi Post on Sunday, NDP Vice President Chikondi Mpokosa emphasized the party’s commitment to unity as a means to bring about meaningful political transformation in Malawi.

“We have indeed expressed strong and consistent opening to forming alliances with all opposition parties,we believe unity is key to creating real transformation,” said Mpokosa

She confirmed that the NDP has already extended an olive branch and held preliminary discussions with several parties however clarified that no formal negotiations have taken place yet.

“While conversation have started we have not yet entered formal negotiates ,we are still waiting for serious dialogue to take place at the table,”She added

In the meantime, the party is shifting its focus to consolidating the Northern Region voting bloc as a strategic move to amplify the opposition’s voice and ensure strong regional representation.

Mpokosa issued a clear timeline, stating that if no concrete alliance is reached by September 16, the NDP is prepared to contest the elections independently.

“If no alliances materializes by the deadline,we are ready to go solo but our doors remain open to any party willing to engage in meaningful talks aligned with our values and vision for Malawi,” she said.

On the matter of electoral integrity, the NDP vice president raised concerns about the Malawi Electoral Commission’s (MEC) reported resistance to an independent audit of the election process.

Transparency and accountability are cornerstone of credible electoral process , MEC resistance to scrutiny is troubling and raises serious doubts about integrity of the elections,”she warned

Mpokosa called on civil society, the media, and the international community to demand greater transparency from MEC, emphasizing that safeguarding democracy must be a shared responsibility.

“Let it be known whether as of an alliance or a solo contender the NDP is ready to stand firm challenge the status and fight for better future for malawians”, she added.

With the political landscape heating up, all eyes are on the opposition’s next moves and whether a united front can be forged in time to challenge the ruling establishment.
