Mzimba District is set to benefit from a new project aimed at strengthening nutrition response and improving health outcomes for local communities, particularly expectant women, mothers, and under-five children.

The “Model project for sustainable health group nutrition activities by local communities” was introduced by the International Support and Partnership for Health (ISAPH) and will run for three years, from April 2025 to 2028.

The project, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to the tune of K783.7 million, will target three areas in Mzimba: Endindeni, Chikangawa, and Katete. According to ISAPH Country Director, Sakuma Yamamoto, the project aims to work with local communities to create sustainable food systems that promote healthy diets and reduce malnutrition.

M’mbelwa District Council Nutrition Officer, Gift Simkonda, has commended ISAPH for introducing the project, saying it will have a significant impact on the health and well-being of local communities.

ISAPH Senior Field Coordinator, John Banda, added that the project will help reduce stunted growth in pregnant women, mothers, and children under five.

The project is expected to make a significant contribution to improving the health and well-being of communities in Mzimba District. With the support of JICA and ISAPH, the project will work closely with local communities to ensure its success.

In a country where climate variability and poverty can exacerbate malnutrition, initiatives like this project are crucial in supporting vulnerable populations.

By focusing on sustainable food systems and nutrition, the project aims to have a lasting impact on the communities it serves.
