BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Secretary for Basic and Secondary Education, Rachel Chimbwete Phiri, has highlighted the importance of Non-School Improvement Grants (Non-SIG funds) in enhancing the quality of education in Malawi.

Phiri made the remarks during a visit to Nyama Primary School in Matapira Zone, Lilongwe Rural East, where she witnessed initiatives being implemented by the community.

Phiri encouraged the school management to take a leading role in ensuring the construction of teachers’ houses, assuring them of the government’s commitment to the project. She also urged other communities to emulate the example set by Nyama Primary School, which has procured land for teachers’ houses.

According to Education consultant Christopher Naunje, the project aims to build the capacity of communities to ensure children access quality education by initiating development without relying on donors.

The initiative seeks to empower communities to take ownership of their education systems and improve the overall quality of education.

Phiri’s visit to Nyama Primary School demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving education standards in the country.

The use of Non-SIG funds is seen as a crucial aspect of this effort, enabling schools to implement initiatives that enhance the quality of education and provide better learning environments for students.
