Nyusi sworn in as Mozambican 4th post independence President, Minister Chaponda was in attendance on behalf of Mutharika

Maputo, January 15: Felipe Nyusi of Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO)’s has Thursday been sworn in as the country’s 4th post independence President at a public ceremony at the Praca da Independencia (Independence square) in the capital Maputo.

 

Nyusi was sworn into office by president of the Constitutional Council, Hermegildo Gamito at ceremony that featured traditional dances, military displays and prayers from different religious leaders.

In his inaugural remarks, President Nyusi encouraged the general public, civil society and religious leaders to contribute towards the desire of having better living standards.

“I will ensure continuity and work towards the dream of having a prosperous Mozambique, united in peace and a developing economy,” he said.

FRELIMO has ruled Mozambique since its independence in 1975 and Nyusi who was born on February 9, 1959 succeeds President Armando Guebuza served his constitutionally mandated two terms.

Foreign Affairs and International Corporation Minister Dr. George Chaponda has applauded Mozambique for its peaceful conduct in the transition of power following the October 15, 2014 general elections.

Chaponda who represented President Arthur Peter Mutharika at the swearing in ceremony of the new Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi in Maputo on Thursday, said he was impressed by support the new leader has received from the outgoing president.

“As a representative of Malawi, I am very impressed by how smoothly power has been handed over from the outgoing President Armando Guebuza to President Nyusi. There is also an assurance by President Guebuza to support the new government,” he said.

The minister added that President Mutharika sends his best regards to the new Mozambique leader and assures him of Malawi’s continued support in strengthening the bilateral relationship that exists between the two countries in sectors such as transport and communication.

Dr. Chaponda was among the high profile guests list at the ceremony. He represented President Mutharika who cancelled his proposed trip for the ceremony because of the worsening floods situation in Malawi.
