LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Malawi’s Parliament has formally requested the Malawi Police Service to provide security protection for its members and witnesses amid threats linked to the ongoing inquiry into the MK128.7 billion acquisition of Amaryllis Hotel by the Public Service Pension Trust Fund.

PAC Chairperson Steven Malondera revealed that both committee members and witnesses have been receiving threats, which have been reported to the police and the National Assembly Speaker.

Malondera assured Malawians that the committee will thoroughly investigate the matter and make necessary recommendations.

The committee has summoned Attorney General Frank Mbeta to appear before it on Wednesday, after he failed to show up on Monday.

An investigation officer from the Anti-Corruption Bureau has also been recalled to clarify inconsistencies in his presentation.

Leader of Opposition Simplex Chithyola Banda has called for the suspension and firing of individuals implicated in the Amaryllis Hotel deal, saying this would demonstrate the President’s commitment to fighting corruption.

The probe has sparked widespread public debate, with many questioning the transparency and value for money in the transaction.

President Arthur Peter Mutharika has expressed support for the inquiry, emphasizing his administration’s stance against corruption.
