Secretary General (SG) Peter Mukhito has called for unity among members of his party, urging them to consolidate their efforts and work towards returning the party to governmental power. His remarks come in response to concerns raised by some members regarding recent appointments of advisors to the party president.

Mukhito’s statement addresses these concerns, emphasizing that according to the party’s constitution, the president is authorized to appoint an unlimited number of advisors. He clarified that these advisors report directly to the president and do not hold any operational responsibilities within the party’s organizational structure.

The party recently announced the appointment of eight new Presidential advisors, including notable figures such as Dr. Clement Mwale, Dr. George Chaponda, Chimwemwe Chipungu, Jean Mathanga, and Everton Chimulirenji. This announcement was made by Shadric Namalomba, the Presidential Spokesperson and National Publicity Secretary.

Presidential advisory roles are crucial for guiding the president on policy matters, strategic decisions, and public relations. These positions play a significant role in shaping the administration’s direction and implementing its agenda. However, the process of appointing these advisors typically occurs outside the party convention framework.

Party conventions, such as the DPP’s recent elective convention on August 18, primarily focus on electing party leaders and defining the party’s policies and platform. They do not usually involve the selection of individual advisory roles. Instead, these positions are filled through direct appointments by the president or head of state based on the advisors’ expertise and their alignment with the administration’s objectives.

The distinction between the convention process and the appointment of advisors is important. While conventions are essential for selecting leadership and setting strategic directions, presidential advisors are appointed to provide targeted support in areas like economic policy, national security, or foreign affairs.

In conclusion, understanding the separate roles of party conventions and presidential appointments helps clarify how leadership and advisory teams are formed. Presidential advisors are selected based on their qualifications and alignment with the president’s vision, ensuring effective governance and implementation of the administration’s agenda.
