BLANTYRE (MaraviPost)–Nephew to former President, Joyce Banda, has been arrested in relation to a robbery of close to K50 million at Petroda Headquarters in Lilongwe last week.
The nephew, Peter Kadawati, was picked at his residence in Blantyre for questioning after his identity card was found in the runaway vehicle that the robbers used and later abandoned at Chitukuko roundabout from where they hijacked a passenger minibus.
31- year old Kadawati is very close to the Bandas and worked for Joyce Banda Foundation International (JBFI) as Programmes Manager for many years. He was fired from his job in 2014 after misappropriating donor funds at the foundation.
The said robbery saw Sergeant Anthony Nkokho being killed as he was part of the security team escorting Petroda accountant to the bank.
Another officer, Constable James Clifford was shot in the head and remains in a critical condition at Kamuzu Central Hospital.
Kadawati’s arrest has since strengthened reports that the former leader has been sponsoring a spate of robberies in order to undermine the Peter Mutharika regime albeit her denial of the same.
It is yet to be seen how the Mutharika government will react now that there is strong evidence linking the former president to the robbery that claimed life of police sergeant.
