Thousands of people thronged to the streets to welcome Malawi leader Peter Mutharika

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)–Thousands of people lined the streets of Lilongwe on Wednesday afternoon, providing a resounding chorus of support and a booming welcome as President Peter Mutharika returned to the city for a campaign tour ahead of the next week’s fresh presidential election.

Throngs of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) suporters, who had camped at Biwi triangle along the M1 Lilongwe – Blantyre road for hours, awaited his arrival, waving signs, chanting and marching, determined to make sure he heard their excitement at the sight of the Malawi leader.

Before highlighting his development agenda, President Mutharika, who has spent much of his time in Blantyre since May 2019 elections told the mammoth crowd that he missed them and that he was glad to meet them again after some months.

Mutharika said he was in the campaign to make sure that they get a landslide victory as DPP-UDF Alliance are certain of securing 50 percent plus one majority votes.

“Winning is certain but we want to do it resoundingly. Losing is completely hypothetical, DPP-UDF alliance is winning come June 23, 2020,” he said.

He argued his administration continues to conceive and implement a number of transformative projects to accelerate Malawi’s development agenda.

Among other things, the Malawi leader cited his administration’s continued upgrading of the country’s road infrastructure, the introduction of bursaries for needy learners, the price reduction of a 50kg bag of fertilizer under Farm Input Subsidy Programme (FISP)  to K5,000 and the introduction of a K15 billion fund through MEDF to help small scale entrepreneurs grow their businesses.

Speaking earlier, Runningmate for the DPP – UDF Alliance Atupele Muluzi joined DPP Secretary General Grelzedar Jeffrey in urging the people to turn up in their large numbers and vote for Mutharika, during the forthcoming fresh presidential poll for continued inclusive national progress.

Mutharika was today expected to continue with his whistle stop tour in the central region but communication from state house indicates that the rallies have been cancelled.

Mutharika will continue on his country wide tour on Friday 19th June 2020 visiting people in Kasungu, Mzimba and Mzuzu City.

According to a statement from the Office of President and Cabinet, the President will at 11 O’clock in the morning address people at Kasungu Boma on Friday.

Later the same day at 2 O’clock in the afternoon the Malawi leader will be at Mzimba Boma and finally at 4 O’clock the President will address people in Mzuzu City.
