President Mutharika seeks comfort with Malawi Army amid political tension in Lilongwe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi President Peter Mutharika directed that a development rally which he is expected to address Tuesday in Lilongwe should be held at Kamuzu Institute for Youth not the political mecca Masintha Ground in Lilongwe due to ‘security concerns’.

Insiders said earlier arrangements were that Mutharika should address a development rally at Masintha Ground after launching the USA funded 250 secondary schools project at Kawale Community Day secondary school earlier on Tuesday.

But after hearing reports that some angry people were ready to ‘chase’ Mutharika away from Masintha, the ever fearful President decided to change the venue to Kamuzu Institute for Youth, Kamuzu Institute for Youth is just a stone throw away from Kamuzu Barracks.

“The President insisted that the venue of the development rally be changed from Masintha to Kamuzu Institute citing security concerns,” said one of Mutharika’s aides.

But another insider said Mutharika wanted to be in the ‘comfort’ of Malawi Army soldiers by being near their barracks, Kamuzu Barracks.

“The President wanted to have a sure and secure place and that is why he was insisting of Kamuzu Institute because it is near Kamuzu Barracks.

He is always living in fear nowadays and cannot go anywhere without Army Tankers,” said a security expert based in Lilongwe.
