BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-One of the country’s Political Analyst Wonderful Mkhutche say opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader Peter Mutharika is the on sowing division and tension in the party.
Mkhutche observes that Mutharika could not issued statement condemning estranged DPP Secretary General Grezelder Jeffrey and Vice-president for South Kondwani Nankhumwa for holding a rally in Lilongwe on Sunday May 1, 2022 without consulting the party’s leadership.
Mkhutche told The Maravi Post that DPP seems to be swimming in unending troubling waters, “And that all this is happening because there is no good leadership from professor Peter Mutharika, who is the leader of the party”.
He added that It is clear that Mutharika is no longer the future of the party therefore, he has to start preparing the party for the future.
Mkhutche faulted Mutharika for continuing leading the party in a way that suggests he will still be around for the next many years.
He said this is just creating suspension and leadership vacuum in the party, especially for the hopefuls.
” Another challenge is that the leader is further dividing the party. He has his own preferred candidates, and is clearly against Kondwani Nakhumwa. What he all need is to be democratic; open up the process and allow anyone to campaign using the party for the presidency.
“Through this, he will make sure strong candidates emerge and the party will come out of the convention united with a strong candidate, ” said Mkhutche.
Mkhutche said the Lilongwe rally which Nankhumwa and Jeffrey held, showed that the party is still alive and well looking at the attendance and mood.
He added that what Mutharika is doing is just to make the party keep on losing opportunities to win back it’s scattered supports, stressing that if this continues, the party will spell doom for May 2025 election.
