Malawi court stops Parliament to confirm Mwapasa as Police Chief

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi court on Tuesday afternoon stopped Parliament to confirm Duncan Mwapasa as the Inspector General of Police.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Lilongwe Mpenu, Eisenhower Mkaka obtained an injunction against the move.

According to the injunction, the legislator wants the court to interpret whether Parliament can confirm another IG when Rodney Jose is holding the same position.

The injunction came while MPs were waiting for Speaker of the National Assembly, Catherine Gotani Hara’s ruling on the Mwapasa confirmation as the new police chief. I

On Monday. Parliament failed to confirm acting Inspector General (IG) of Malawi Police Service, Duncan Mwapasa, following a heated debate in the august House.

Opposition lawmakers argued that, according to the Constitution, Parliament cannot confirm another IG when Rodney Jose is holding the position
