A consortium of South African companies operating in Malawi has strongly condemned the violence against foreign nationals in their country.
In a joint statement, the 10 South African companies and concerned organisations say they unequivocally condemn the violence, which has left three Malawians dead and nearly 3,000 others repatriated.
“Africa is our collective home and we therefore stand in solidarity with all peace loving Africans who reject racism, xenophobia and who respect the rule of law and the sanctity of human life,” reads the statement.
It says the consortium acknowledges that their operations and indeed their success in Malawi depended on continuing to serve the needs of Malawi.
“We remain indebted to the goodwill of Malawians. This goodwill of Malawians is not taken for granted,” reads the statement.
The reaction comes as the Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA) has stepped up weekend boycotts of popular South African retailers Game, Shoprite and Pep Stores.
The statement was signed by Metropolitan Health Limited, Illovo Sugar Malawi Limited, Get Bucks, MacSteel, Shoprite, Nedbank, InterCape buses, and South African Airways (SAA).
