ChaCha handovers waiting shelter to Lingadzi Police Station

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-One of Malawi’s well-known businesswomen and philanthropists, Chawezi Banda, popularly known as ChaCha has handed over a newly constructed waiting shelter to Lingadzi Police in Area 18, Lilongwe.

The shelter is intended to serve people who come to report cases or visit their relatives at the station.

Through her spokesperson, Lackin Moffat said “This is just one of the many charitable initiatives she is undertaking across the country.

“She has also been supporting education and health initiatives. The donation fulfills a request that was made by Lingadzi Police authorities”.

He added, “Many people think that in order to help someone you need to be extremely wealthy, but what we are showing here today is that in our country, helping does not require having a lot”.

Senior Superintendent Kennedy Sangala of Lingadzi Police said the shelter will help reduce the challenges people face when waiting in the sun or rain to report cases or visit relatives.

Group Village Head Sandram Banda of Area 18 added that since Lingadzi Police serves a large population, the shelter will greatly improve the experience of community members when they come seeking help.

Police arrest two for cyber spamming, impersonating Triephornia Mpinganjira’s Facebook account

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police Service (MPS) at Lingadzi station are keeping in custody two young men aged 24 for impersonating Triephonia Thomson Mpinganjira’s facebook account.

Lingadzi Police Station Deputy publicist Maria Kumwenda has identified the suspects as Amos Charles and Joel Salanda who were arrested on Monday, March 10, 2025.

Police Publicist Kumwenda told The Maravi Post that from January, 2025 Triephonia Mpinganjira who has been doing charity works in the country “Noted that some people are using and running facebook account pages bearing her name and posting her photos with intentions to steal from innocent Malawians”.

Kumwenda explains, “The two suspects allegedly created a fake account and have been deceiving people to send them money with false promises of assistance.

“The matter was reported to Lingadzi Police station where detectives used cyber intelligence to track down and apprehend the suspects”.

The Police Publicist adds, “The first suspect, Amos Charles was using an Airtel money account bearing the name of Janet Tembo for receiving money and he was arrested in Monkeybay while Joel was arrested in Mzuzu.

“The duo are expected to appear in court of law soon to answer the charges levelled against them while others are still being tracked down”.

Kumwenda appeals, “Police is advising social media users to strictly open their account with their legal names and not attacking others on social media platform”.

The suspects Charles hails from Traditional Authority (T.A) Nankumba, Mangochi district while Salanda hails from Tekha village (T.A) Chindi in Mzimba.

Malawi Police arrest Tamia Ja over MK8 million theft

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police in Lilongwe at Lingadzi Station this week arrested Tamia Ja, whose real name is Hannah Jabes over MK8 million theft allegations.

Lingadzi Police Station Publicist Cassim Manda confirmed the arrest on Jabes on Thursday afternoon, March 14, 2024.

“I can confirm that we have arrested Hannah Jabes, aka Tamia Ja, over theft allegations.

“She was arrested a few days ago after our officers received a complaint from a certain businessperson that Tamia Ja allegedly defrauded him of his K8, 000,000 after he mistakenly sent the cash to her account, which he wanted to send to someone,” explains Manda.

The police publicist adds, “At first, the suspect Tamia acknowledged receipt of the money and told the complainant that she was travelling to South Africa and would do the transactions when she gets back.

“Afterwards, Jabes started showing perverse behavior by not being willing to send back the money until her arrest”.

Jabes is currently on police bail while waiting for trial on theft charges.

Lilongwe’s Travel agent imposter Gilbert Chirambo arrested for duping catholic women MK24m

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Police Service in the capital Lilongwe are keeping in custody a 45 year-old man after he allegedly posed as a travel agent and stole MK24 million from women belonging to Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) who are due to head to Italy for a pilgrimage.

Deputy Police Publicity Officer for Lingadzi Police, Maria Kumwenda identified the suspect as Gilbert Chirambo.

Kumwenda told The Maravi Post that 30 CWO members intend to travel to Rome in Italy on May 11 but Chirambo convinced them that he was a travel agent and would buy them air tickets.

The police publicist added that it has now taken two months for Chirambo to bring the women the tickets and this compelled the women to report the issue to police that arrested the accused

Chirambo only returned MK9.9 million thereby remaining with almost MK13 million for him to pay back.

The suspect is expected to appear before court soon

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Police at Lingadzi Station in Lilongwe on Saturday, December 17, 2022, arrested four people including two ex-convicts for the offence of fraud.

The suspects are identified as Wane Simbeye, Peter Sungani, Aaryan Nkapu and Noel Swally.

According to Lingadzi Police Station publicist Salomy Zgambo said Simbeye is an employee of Telecom Networks Malawi (TNM), Sungani is a mobile money agent for both TNM and Airtel; Nkapu and Sally are both ex-convincts.

Zgambo disclosed that the arrest of the four follows rampant cases of simcard swap and online fraud cases reported in various stations, including Lingadzi Police Station.

“In one case lodged at the station, Mr Joab Frank Chakhaza who works as a broadcaster at Zodiak Broadcasting Service and Mr Edwin Maluwa both complained that between 21 and 24 November, 2022 their phone numbers were swaped without their consent and that fraudsters managed to transfer their money amounting to over MK3 million from their National and Standard Bank accounts, respectively.

“Following investigations, Noel and Peter were found with both sim registration and sim swap applications which were being used for their illegal activities,” said Zgambo.

She added, “Upon being interviewed they all admitted to be the ones responsible for the crimes.

“Currently, investigations are still in progress to recover the stolen money and arrest other suspects linked to the case”.

Meanwhile, police have confiscated the phones that the suspects were using to commit the offence.

Simbeye, aged 28 comes from Dakalinali village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Mbewe in Karonga, Sungani, 32, hails from Namisemba village, T.A Mwambo in Dedza and Nkapu, 23, hails from Germany village, T.A Traditional Chikowi in Zomba while Swally, 22 years originates from Nkanda village, T.A Chikowi in Zomba.

Six arrested on series of robberies in Lilongwe

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Police at Lingadzi Police station in Lilongwe are keeping in their custody six suspects over a series of robberies in Lilongwe between July to September 2022.

The six were arrested on Monday October 3, 2022.

According Lingadzi Police Station spokesperson, Salome Zgambo, the six, in August this year, allegedly broke into a house of McDonald Kanayama Phiri in Area 47 and went away with various items including a shotgun rifle.

Zgambo said It is believed that using the same rifle, the gang has been terrorizing Areas 14, 15 and 47 where numerous items were also stolen.

He said, following the arrest of the six they have managed to recover the rifle and other items like laptops, desktop computers, monitors, mattresses and other household items.

Zgambo added that the recovered items are valued at around K5 million.

The six are Limbani Dickson, Dickson Maliki, Gift Steven, Wilson Nalia, Tannex Mtalimanja and Paul Robert.

Meanwhile, Lingadzi Police is appealing to those who lodged a complaint at the station to go and identify their property.

Decomposed female corps found at Lilongwe’s Botanic garden: Malawi police hunt for assailants

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Dead body of a female person suspected to have been murdered has been found in a decomposed state at Botanic garden in the capital Lilongwe.

The deceased body which was on Thursday, September 16, 2021 around 9:00 hours is yet to be identified.

Lingadzi Police station publicist Salomy Zgambo told The Maravi Post that deceased is believed to be aged between 25 and 30.

“Police and medical personnel from Area 18 Health Centre visited the scene of crime and discovered that death occurred some months ago and the head was amputated from the body while the skull was tied on the roots of a tree.

“It is also believed that the lady was raped before being murdered.The clinical officer viewed the body and confirmed that death was due to assault,” says Zgambo.

Police are therefore appealing to the public that those whose relative is missing should visit Lingadzi Police and Kamuzu Central Hospital mortuary where the dead body is being kept.

Nigerian national arrested in Malawi for possessing drugs

Malawi Police have arrested a Nigerian national, identified as Ejike Ebenechi who is believed to have been found with drugs, contrary to Section 11 under regulation 19 of the Dangerous Drugs Act.

Ebenechi, 28, was arrested on Friday, 9 July in Area 49, also known Dubai in the capital city.

The suspect is being kept at Lingadzi Police Station, according to Sergeant Salome Zgambo, spokesperson for the station.

“Lingadzi Police drug officers, through intelligence driven operation, had it that the said suspect was selling illicit drug in area 49.

“Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers  followed  it up and through the information and well-coordinated operation arrested  the said suspect after he was found with the said drug. The drug was seized, and the suspect arrested,” said Zgambo.

However, Zgambo did not disclose the drug that have since been seized and will be sent to Medicine and Poison Board for examination and thereafter suspect will be taken to court.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi police at Lingadzi station in the capital Lilongwe are keeping in custody a thirty-two-year old Nigerian national for allegedly possessing cocaine.

LingadzaPolice Station Spokesperson Foster Benjamin has identified the suspect as Amachi Akoligwe who was arrested on Monday at his Area 47 residence following atip-off the police received from well-wishers.

Benjamin told TheMaravi Post that Akoligwe was found with 20 pounds of the suspected illicit drug upon his arrest.

“Investigations arestill underway to trace the sources of the dangerous drug. Akoligwe who hailsfrom Imo state in Nigeria, is expected to appear in court soon”, said Benjamin
