Animal Encounters for Kids in Cape Town

Keeping kids entertained during the holidays is a difficult job. There are few things as wholesome as kids getting up close and personal with Mother Nature’s majestic, weird, and hilarious critters.

Here are our picks for the best animal encounters for kids in Cape Town.

Aquila Private Game Reserve

Aquila is home to the Big 5 and makes for the perfect safari break from Cape Town, just a two hour drive away. The indoor and outdoor areas have a variety of activities aimed at all kids from toddlers to pre-teens. The outside area has a mini-golf course, a sandpit, and a wooden playground to delight your little ones. There are also daily activities and a Junior Ranger program, so send the kids off to discover the wild while you unwind at the pool, enjoy a massage, or go for dinner.

Imhoff Farm

Imhoff Farm in Kommetjie makes for a great day trip with the kids. This quaint farmstead has a number of animal activities to keep your little ones entertained. There are also two restaurants where parents can unwind with a cup of coffee while kids can play on the lawns.

There’s plenty for the kids to do, from camel rides to the Higgeldy Piggeldy Farmyard, where kids can feed rabbits, goats, and ponies. After that, there’s the Imhoff Snake Park, a reptile sanctuary that’s a hit with courageous kids. Older kids will also enjoy the beach rides on offer at Imhoff Equestrian Centre.

Two Oceans Aquarium

The Two Oceans Aquarium is one of Cape Town’s best attractions for kids. Featuring over 3,000 marine animals, the Aquarium offers edutainment at its finest—giving kids the opportunity to learn about the rich biodiversity in our oceans while having an absolute blast. The Nemo display is a particularly big hit.

Step into another world at Butterfly World, one of Cape Town’s most unique family-friendly attractions. This tropical greenhouse and garden is a delight for children–and gives parents a great opportunity to sharpen their photography skills. Boulders Beach

Boulders Beach is one of Cape Town’s most famous beaches, with its characteristic granite boulders and calm, relatively warm waters. But it’s the penguins that are the real stars of Boulders. Kids love these waddling, braying little guys, and you can combine this unique animal encounter experience with some swimming and sandcastle building on the beach.

The Duck Parade at Vergenoegd Wine Estate

Have your kids ever seen over 1,000 ducks going for a morning jog? The Duck Parade happens at Vergenoegd Wine Estate daily at 10:30, 12:30 and 15:30, so go for a breakfast or lunch at the excellent restaurants and let your kids roam the rolling lawns.

Ostriches are weird creatures, and your kids will love their cartoonish antics. Head out to the Cape Town Ostrich Ranch on the N7, and your kids will be able to ride an ostrich, watch the male ostrich do his funky dance to impress his lady, and play in the extensive play area.

The Alpaca Loom

The Alpaca Loom has got to be one of the most interesting animal encounters you can have in Cape Town. Created as a labour of love by Dietmar Keil and Kerstin Heisterkamp, this alpaca farm has a petting zoo and play area for the kids, and a coffee shop and gift shop for the adults.

Hike to the Beautiful Crystal Pools Near Gordon’s Bay

Jump into a pool of refreshing mountain water and escape the city just an hour outside of Cape Town when you hike to Crystal Pools near Gordon’s Bay. By “refreshing”, of course, we mean quite cold – in true Cape Town fashion. But after 45 minutes to an hour of hiking at the Steenbras Nature Reserve, it comes as sweet relief from the heat.

Here’s everything you need to know about this memorable hike that offers so much to anyone looking for adventure and a fun day out.

The Trail

The beautiful Crystal Pool Hiking Trail starts on the R44, just after you’ve crossed the bridge over the mouth of the Steenbras River. You need to book your permits ahead of time and these will be checked on arrival. Once you’re in, you’ll need to follow the little yellow footprints to ensure you stay on the path. The trail is lush with indigenous fynbos, and there are large boulders along the route.

Crystal Pools at Gordon's Bay

The first pool is about 45 minutes from the start of the trail and you can stop here for a snack or break in the shade. For some serious swimming and kloofing opportunities, it’s best to hold out for the second pool, which is another ten to fifteen minutes up. There is also a waterfall, which you can stand below and enjoy an open-air cold shower.

Jumping off of the rocks into the pools is exhilarating, but we’d like to stress that you should only do this with a professional guide or expert hiker who is familiar with the route and the pools. It is a lot of fun, but it’s also dangerous so don’t take any chances if it’s your first time. It goes without saying you should never dive, but we’ll say it anyway.

It’s only a 2km hike, but your legs will beg to differ. It starts out fairly easy but the climb gets tough. If you’re up for the challenge you can keep going after the second pool to the third pool that offers more swimming opportunities and an excellent view of the area.

Kloofing at Crystal Pools

The Fauna and Flora

The Crystal Pools hike falls under the greater Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, home to over 1,600 plant species. This unique Kogelberg sandstone fynbos is also loved by troops of baboons. Reserve management tracks their movements and will able to tell you on the day whether baboons are nearby. It’s important to keep food securely stashed away and to act respectfully and responsibly around these highly intelligent, opportunistic, mischievous animals. Fynbos mountain ranges in the Western Cape also hosts African wildcats, cape clawless otters, large spotted genets, caracals, cape foxes, and leopards, but most of the cats in this area are nocturnal, so not something you need to sweat over.

Permits

The hike is open from the beginning of November (bookings open 1 October) until the end of April annually and is closed during the winter season for rehabilitation. You can book for a group of between two and 10 people (only 50 people are allowed on the reserve per day, so you’ll feel a bit like you have the place to yourself).

The entry fee for the Steenbras River Gorge is R80 per person and the entry fee for the Steenbras hiking trails is R25 per person. You’ll need to book and pay in advance and bring your permit with on the day. All of this is done to ensure the area is taken care of and to prevent soil erosion and damage to the natural fauna and flora.

To book, email steenbras.naturereserve@capetown.gov.za with the size of your party at least two working days before you’d like to set off. They’re open from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) from 8:30am to 2:30pm.

For more information on permits, click here or visit the City of Cape Town’s website.

Hike Responsibly

General hiking safety tips apply, but make sure you have good hiking shoes, a sun hat, and sunblock—this hike is in full sun, which makes the pools all the more refreshing.

Pack enough water and some snacks for a lovely lunch by the pools. It’s a bin-free hike, so take an extra bag for your trash and pick up any litter you might spot along the way. Please don’t disturb the natural plant life or animals and act responsibly while on the reserve. Walk single file to avoid soil erosion and stick to the well-trodden footpaths.

My Cape Town: Matthew Sterne

Matthew Sterne, a tour guide, storyteller, and travel writer, has dedicated his life to celebrating and sharing his deep love for Cape Town. Through his engaging walking tours, he brings the city’s past and present to life, connecting visitors to the people and places that make the Mother City exceptional.

As the founder of Natural Wanders and a proud Sea Point resident, Matthew spent his early twenties on what he affectionately calls a “gap decade,” collecting stories and passport stamps from around the world. He worked for a pub crawl in Amsterdam, an ice cream factory in Norway, and even as a door-to-door lightbulb exchanger in Melbourne. Along the way, he volunteered at a turtle sanctuary in Nicaragua, joined a camel safari in India, and contributed to a newspaper in Colombia. When he eventually returned home, his work as a travel writer took him across South Africa, which ultimately led him into tour guiding. “What I love about being a tour guide in Cape Town is that the city is even more fascinating than it is beautiful. It is full of characters, legends, and these icons,” he says. Here’s how he spends his ideal day in Cape Town.

“Secret” beach at Maiden’s Cove

If you’re looking for a beach that’s off the beaten track but offers stunning views, Matthew is happy to share details about his favourite “secret spot” at Maiden’s Cove near Camps Bay. Park your car by the picnic area and take a walk down the path. The beach is a short stroll from Maiden’s Cove tidal pool. As Matthew describes it, “It’s one of the best secret swimming spots in Cape Town!” Just a quick note: there are no lifeguards on duty, so swimming is at your own risk.

Signal Hill View Point

For one of the most breathtaking panoramic viewpoints in Cape Town, drive along Signal Hill Road towards the Kramat of Sheikh Mohamed Hassen Ghaibie Shah. Parking is available at the Kramat or at the Lion’s Head parking area. From the Kramat car park, follow the trail towards Lion’s Head, but when you reach the signpost, turn left to reach the lookout.

Matthew says: “I love this viewpoint because you can see all the major landmarks in the city: Robben Island, Sea Point, Devil’s Peak, the City Bowl, the Harbour, Table Mountain, and Lion’s Head.” There are benches available, making it a great spot for a picnic. Remember to carry water and sun protection, as it can get quite hot.

The Rooftop Bar, Trade Boutique Hotel

Sip your favourite cocktail while taking in sweeping views of Cape Town’s inner city from The Rooftop Bar, situated at the Trade Boutique Hotel on Shortmarket Street. For cocktail enthusiasts, the menu offers a creative and refreshing range. Wine lovers can sample a variety of cultivars and blends that showcase the unique terroirs of the Cape Winelands. Day visitors are welcome to relax by the pool — towels are provided — as long as you purchase from the bar. “I’ve been to almost every cocktail bar in the city, and this place is one of my favourites,” Matthew says. “The views are incredible, I love being on the rooftop, and the drinks are top class too.”

Ganesh

Ganesh, formerly known as Café Ganesh, is where you’ll find Matthew when he’s searching for a lekker meal. This iconic spot is where the best of Obs gather — from artists and students to locals and travellers, all united by the mouthwatering Thai-inspired menu and a lively events calendar. The menu may be seasonal and small, but every dish is full of flavour.

“The food is amazing and extremely affordable. They host music events throughout the week.”

Boulders Beach

There are many restaurants in and around the area if you want to enjoy sundowners after.

This incredible stretch of coastline garners a well-deserved international reputation as one of the best windsurfing and kitesurfing areas in the world. Blouberg Beach

Fish Hoek

Location:  Beach Road, Fish Hoek

With lifeguards and shark spotters on duty, you can enjoy the water safely. The pet-friendly beach is perfect to enjoy with friends and family.

General Beach Safety Tips

  • Always choose a lifeguarded beach. Swim between the designated red and yellow lifeguard flags.
  • Supervise your kids, family and friends in the water, even in the lifeguarded flagged zone.
  • Take time to read the information signage when entering a beach.
  • Teach your kids to always go to the lifeguards if they get lost.
  • If you find yourself in trouble, do not panic. Try to float on your back, raise your arms, and call for help. Never try to swim against a rip current.
  • Never use inflatables such as small boats or mattresses at the beach.
  • If you see someone in trouble, alert the lifeguards or call sea rescue.
  • Never enter the water to rescue someone without calling emergency services first. Also, never enter the water without emergency flotation like the NSRI pink rescue buoy, found at most beaches.
  • Be sure to stay hydrated and protected from the sun.
