Meet the Penguins at Boulders Beach

The beautiful Boulders Beach is one of Cape Town’s most visited beaches and the only place in the world where you get close to African Penguins.

Cape Town definitely has no shortage of amazing beaches, but Boulders Beach in False Bay offers something extra special – a colony of African Penguins in all their smartly dresses, waddling glory, right under your nose. In fact, it’s the only place in the world where you can get close to African Penguins.

Famous Citizens

In 1982 a couple of these little crowd-pleasers settled on the soft white sand between the large granite boulders that protect the beach from wind and large, stormy waves, and currently the population is estimated between 2,000 and 3,000 birds. Sadly the African Penguin has been classified as an endangered species, due to things like over-fishing, habitat destruction, pollution, and irresponsible tourism activities, and the Boulders Beach colony has also felt the effect, with numbers dwindling over the last couple of years.

Thankfully, Boulders and its surrounding beaches now form part of the Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area, thus ensuring the beaches are safe and clean, and the penguins protected. A couple of years ago three wheelchair-friendly boardwalks were constructed to accommodate the nearly 60,000 visitors that visit the beach each year. These boardwalks wind their way through the dunes and vegetation and not only provides great viewing spots, but also protects nesting penguins and their chicks. However, you can still spot one or two of the little fellas waddling through the parking lot from time to time.

Penguin at Boulder's Beach in Simon's Town

What to Do

Boulders Beach isn’t just a great place for penguins, it’s also a popular family-friendly swimming beach where kids can climb over the boulders, explore the rock pools, or swim in the cool, clear False Bay water. It’s also a great place for a leisurely picnic. Due to the R55 conservation fee, the beach is rarely packed.

If you’d like to learn more about the area’s famous inhabitants, be sure to pop over to the Boulders Visitors Centre where expert guides will give you tonnes of interesting information about Africa’s own, unique penguins.

How to Get There

Boulders Beach is situated False Bay, just outside Simon’s Town, on the way to Cape Point. It’s about an hour’s drive by car from the CBD.

There are a couple of routes you can take to get there:

  • Around the mountain via the Southern Suburbs, and leafy Bishops Court, past the Constantia Valley to Kalk Bay, then along the coast to Simon’s Town
  • From Camps Bay via Hout Bay, along Chapman’s Peak drive, past Noordhoek and Kommetjie (an incredibly scenic drive)

If you’d like to use public transport:

  • Catch a train from Cape Town Station all the way to Simon’s Town (be sure to buy a First Class ticket). The train runs along the Kalk Bay coastline, an incredibly scenic train ride. From Simon’s Town you can either take the 30 or so minute walk through the historic little naval town, or catch a taxi.
  • The newly launched City Sightseeing’s Cape Point Explorer also stops at Boulders on its way to Cape Point and it’s a convenient and affordable trip to take.
  • Some hotels and tour operators offer transfers from the CBD and back.

What to Bring

  • There’s a conservation fee, so bring some cash
  • An umbrella, hat, and sunscreen if you plan on spending the day on the beach
  • Weather-appropriate clothing, especially during winter, when the weather can be quite unpredictable. Winter is also the rainy season, so bring an umbrella or raincoat

Important notices from SANParks:

  • Boulders is a safe beach, with rangers on patrol each day
  • Do NOT feed the penguins or come too close. While they may look cute, they’re still wild animals.
  • Parking is limited, especially during peak Summer, so come early
  • Alcohol and smoking prohibited
  • No vessels are allowed, including canoes and kayaks
  • Because it’s part of the Marine Protected Area, it is a no-take zone, which means no marine life may be removed.
  • For entry and exit times, please check the SANParks website

Milo Ventimiglia’s Wife Jarah Mariano Debuts Pregnancy With Bikini Pic

Milo Ventimiglia and his wife, Jarah Mariano, are expecting their second baby together, Us Weekly can confirm.

“Happy 1 year, baby girl. When you came into my life I had two distinct thoughts, one immediately after the other — I would die for you in a heartbeat, but now I also have to live as long as I possibly can to be around to make sure you’re safe,” Mariano, 41, wrote via Instagram on Saturday, January 24. “This is the most unique love I’ve ever experienced, just as unique of a soul you are.”

She continued, “In a world with so much fear and hatred, I know that you will bring your radiating light everywhere you go to make it a better and brighter place for those around you. I love you Ke’ala Coral, forever.”

Mariano also uploaded a sweet photo where she held her daughter, who was born last year, while swimming in a body of water. Mariano and Ke’ala twinned in bucket hats, with the proud mom also wearing a brown bikini that appeared to display a growing baby bump.

Mariano and Ventimiglia, 48, have not further addressed their presumed upcoming arrival.

Many of Mariano’s social media followers, meanwhile, offered their congratulations in the comments section.

Vanessa Gringer, a real estate agent who Mariano follows back, replied, “Happy Birthday sweet Ke’ala, big sister! ❤️Congratulations 🎉.”

Hairstylist Caterina Alfieri, whom Mariano also follows, added, “Pure bliss 🤍 🌊. I love you and your sweet family.”

Mariano also shared her beachfront image to her Instagram Stories, writing, “Hau’oli la hanau KCV,” which translates to “happy birthday” in Hawaiian.

Us broke the news in October 2023 that Ventimiglia secretly wed Mariano several months earlier after keeping most of their romance under wraps. The couple announced in September 2024 that they were expecting their first child and Mariano gave birth to Ke’ala in January 2025.

“Houseless, never homeless. Welcome back Ke’ala Coral Ventimiglia 🌈,” Mariano wrote via Instagram last year, revealing she and Ventimiglia lost their house in the devastating Los Angeles wildfires that month. “[On] January 7th my family and I evacuated from the Palisades Fire. We lost our home that we were living in and everything we own, as well as our home under construction that we were about to move into.”

Mariano stressed at the time that her family were “together, happy, healthy and safe.”

“[That] is truly all that matters,” she stated. “We are deeply grateful to all of the heroes who help battle fires, as well as care for everyone affected by the aftermath for years to come. … Gentle reminder to all, to please allow us this time and space to nest with our newborn in such a delicate phase.”

Months later, Ventimiglia gave Us an exclusive update about their rebuilding process.

“We’re doing great. My wife is the strongest person I know, and to be able to rebound from any of that is huge,” the This Is Us alum told Us in December 2025. “But at the same time, [we’re] still dealing with insurance a year later. We’re still dealing with the remnants of the fires, but thank God we’ve been responsible with our funds and finances and were ready for something like this to happen.”

Top Sea Safety Tips for Cape Town Summers

Sunny skies see many locals and visitors to Cape Town excited to enjoy the stunning beaches and explore many ocean activities. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe when you hit the beach.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), along with the police and emergency services, has asked people to be cautious in and around coastal and inland waters. Here are some tips to consider:

  • Follow the South African Weather Service’s forecast updates and heed weather warnings. According to the NSRI, rough sea conditions affect the coastline, with stormy deep-sea waters creating hazardous conditions in certain areas. In a statement, they mentioned that the recent heavy snowfall in some inland regions may lead to swollen rivers (rivers that contain more water than normal as a result of heavy rain or melting snow). You can follow @SAWeatherServic on X for updates.
  • The commercial maritime industry and recreational boaters, paddlers, and sailors are urged to be cautious around the coastline and download and use the free NSRI SafeTrx smartphone app. The app monitors a boat’s journey and alerts emergency contacts nominated by the user if they do not return to shore on time. This free mobile application enables users to plot their intended course, store essential emergency numbers that can be accessed by the NSRI if they do not return from their trip and always provides NSRI with the user’s location during the journey.
  • Wear life jackets when out at sea or taking part in activities in rivers, lakes, and dams.
  • Swim at beaches protected by lifeguards, and always be aware of rip currents that can form at different places along the coastline.
  • Anglers and coastal hikers should exercise caution, particularly during high tide, and avoid getting too close to the shoreline.
  • Avoid crossing flooded roadways or bridges that are submerged by swollen rivers.
  • Parents and carers must ensure children have responsible adult supervision in and around water.
  • Please ensure that your swimming pool, or one you visit, has implemented the necessary safety measures.

Rob Reiner’s Daughter Romy Marks Her Birthday 2 Weeks After Parents’ Deaths

Romy Reiner turned 28 amid the aftermath of her parents Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner’s murders.

Romy’s birthday fell on Saturday, December 27, nearly two weeks to the day since her parents were found dead.

<

p class=”p1″>According to photos obtained by the Daily Mail, Romy marked her birthday surrounded by family and loved ones, including boyfriend Alex Silberberg, at a beach house in Malibu, California.

Earlier this month, The New York Times reported that Romy discovered her father’s body in her parents’ home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles on December 14. Romy went to check on them after they failed to open the house’s gate for a massage therapist who arrived for a scheduled appointment.

According to the outlet, Romy’s roommate called 911 after Romy found her dad’s body. Romy reportedly did not see her mother’s body in the house and only learned of Michele’s death once paramedics arrived.

Romy’s brother Nick Reiner was arrested and ultimately charged with two counts of first-degree murder on December 16. He has yet to enter a plea and is set to be arraigned on January 7.

Despite previous claims, a source told The New York Times that Romy informed the police that Nick, 32, “lived on the property also” but “did not suggest to the authorities that her brother might be a suspect.”

Romy and her eldest brother, Jake Reiner, released a statement on December 17 after their sibling was accused of their parents’ murders.

Rob Reiner and Wife Michele’s Deaths: Everything We Know So Far

“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience,” the statement read. “They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”

Jake, 34, and Romy added, “We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life.”

As their brother faced criminal charges, Jake and Romy requested sensitivity from the public.

They concluded: “We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”

Inside Rob, Michele Reiner’s Final Days Before Son’s Arrest for Their Deaths

Days later, a spokesperson for Jake and Romy said in a Monday, December 22, statement that the siblings “remain grateful for the outpouring of love and support they have received.” They also plan to “share information about a memorial service honoring their parents at a later date.”

After Nick’s alleged involvement in the case became public, a source spoke exclusively to Us Weekly about his and Romy’s dynamic leading up to their parents’ deaths.

“Romy has been so traumatized by Nick’s behavior,” the insider told Us. “She has always been so close with her parents, and watching their constant pain over Nick has impacted her and the whole family so much.”

Just two weeks before her parents’ deaths, Romy posted photos of herself and Rob swimming in the ocean on November 29, emphasizing their strong father-daughter bond.

‘Heated Rivalry’ May Be Over, But This Sexy Netflix Show Should Fill the Void

A promising new Netflix show was shaping up to be another win for the platform — and then, this week, it was canceled.

Netflix is often too eager to dole out cancellations like candy, and unfortunately, Olympo was its latest victim.

The Spanish-language show follows young athletes at the Pirineos High Performance Center, and the swimming captain who believes some athletes are going to extremes to be the best.

Olympo has plenty of competitive intrigue and steamy sex scenes, and fans of Heated Rivalry in particular may find it to be their next favorite binge. Watch With Us has three reasons why you should check it out.

Is HBO’s ‘Heated Rivalry’ Based on a Book? Biggest Onscreen Differences

It’s a Great Show If You Like Seeing Beautiful People Have Sex

Perhaps, the plot of Olympo isn’t the most well-executed thing you’ll ever see, but that’s probably not why you’re watching it anyway, is it? The YA sports series follows the athletes at an elite performing center in Spain, where they face enormous amounts of pressure to stay there — and see how far they’ll go to do it. Toned, athletic bodies, huge amounts of stress and wildly competitive streaks. What do you think that’s a recipe for? Well, if you’ve seen Heated Rivalry, then you know exactly what.

Olympo really does have a surprising amount of borderline softcore sex scenes for a purportedly “YA” show, but that doesn’t mean we’re complaining. It does mean that a coherent plot and more complex, nuanced character gets tossed to the side a little bit in favor of showcasing ambitions, beauty and hormones. It helps that the young actors portraying these attractive athletes are giving it their all and looking good doing it, too. We don’t need every show to be Apple TV’s excellent sci-fi and thematically heavy show, Pluribus. We’re only human after all.

It’s Not High Art, But It’s Fun to Watch

Juan Perales as Sebas Senghor, Agustin Della Corte as Roque Pérez in Olympo

Again, while the plot of Olympo isn’t the most thoughtfully developed, don’t think for a second that the show is only entertaining in its sex scenes. The series is incredibly energetic, propulsive and surprising, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. While the athletes at the Pirineos High Performance Center are pushed to their physical and mental limits, some athletes seek unethical ways to push themselves even further than that. That’s where the central conspiracy of the show comes in.

However, the show also looks good, too, even beyond when the camera is focused on sex and skin: it boasts immersive production design and cinematography that make it easy to slip into the highly competitive world of the show, further carried by an infectious electronic score and some recognizable needle drops. Basically, Olympo has everything you’d want in a salacious teen drama.

The Cast Is Phenomenal — With One Particular Standout

Agustin Della Corte as Roque Pérez in Olympo

The young cast of Olympo is genuinely great, believable as the athletes they’re portraying and convincing in their relationships with one another. They’re also probably not widely known to American audiences: fans may recognize Augustín Della Corte, who made his acting debut last year in Netflix’s Society of the Snow, and he’s accompanied by Nira Oshaia, Clara Galle, Nuno Gallego and María Romanillos.

HBO Max’s New Show ‘Heated Rivalry’ Has Everyone Talking — Is It Worth Watching?

However, it’s Della Corte who is handily the show’s standout performance. He portrays controversial rugby player Roque Pérez, who has been mired in scandal due to his sexuality and receives a suspicious amount of attention from a shady sports apparel brand. Yet while everyone around Roque makes consistently toxic decisions, it is Roque who is the easiest to root for, while Della Corte portrays him with necessary internal conflict and empathy. He could be the next Connor Storrie or Hudson Williams if enough Heated Rivalry fans flock to Netflix and make Olympo an unexpected streaming hit.

DWTS’ Mark Ballas Had Whitney Freestyle Concept ‘Brewing for a While’

Dancing With the Stars pro Mark Ballas had been workshopping his and partner Whitney Leavitt’s potential freestyle long before they actually debuted it on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast.

“I want to thank this incredible team for all of their hard work, passion and relentlessness to help me bring this vision to life in under 72 hours,” Ballas, 39, wrote via Instagram on Saturday, November 29, of performing the routine days earlier. “I had this concept brewing for a while, made mood boards filled with imagery and inspiration. I had been working on the music arrangement for two weeks.”

Ballas and the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star, 32, were eliminated during the DWTS season 34 semi-finals despite consistently topping the leaderboard throughout the season. Within weeks, the pair got the call to appear on Alex Cooper’s podcast and discuss their journey.

“From that moment on, [my team and I] were firing on all cylinders and had to build it from total scratch from the choreography, venue, lighting, direction, cameras, dancers, hair, make up, wardrobe, props, art direction, production and editing,” Ballas recalled, referring to the Broadway-style routine. “Thank you to @alexandracooper for inviting us to be on your show and for putting this whole thing together with ABC and DWTS. You are an incredible interviewer. As someone who sometimes shies away from interviews you made me feel comfortable and relaxed.”

Why Mark Ballas Decided to Come Back to ‘DWTS’ After Hiatus

Ballas also thanked the DWTS execs including Conrad Green, Deena Katz and Rob Mills for “trusting in [him] to bring this vision to life on such a big platform.”

“I am extremely grateful,” he gushed, going on to address Leavitt directly. “What a wild ride, thank you for all your hard work, grit, determination and many belly laughs we shared. I’m so proud of you and was so happy to share this experience with you.”

He continued, “It’s funny that you got your start on a ‘reality show’ but I got to see and know the real you. Congrats on all the exciting things coming up for you and remember ‘just keep swimming.’”

Ballas and Leavitt also had the complete support of the three-time mirrorball champ’s wife, BC Jean, and other family members.

“To my endlessly loving & supportive wife @bcjean thank you for always being down to go on the adventure and for letting me totally lose myself in my process,” Ballas concluded his Saturday tribute. “I literally couldn’t do any of this without you by my side. Words cannot express how grateful I am to have you in my life. I love you so much, and I simply cannot wait for some much-needed family time with our sweet little [son].”

Mark is the son of legendary ballroom dancers Corky and Shirley Ballas, both of whom have been in his corner all season long.

Tips For Your Cape Town Summer Beach Days

Summer is here and many visitors and locals will be flocking to their nearest beaches for a cool-down. Before you take a dip, it’s worth brushing up on a few simple rules that keeps everyone safe and our beaches beautiful.

Here’s everything you need to know for a fun, fuss-free day by the sea.

Safety First

The city has a few clear rules in place. These are set out in the City’s Coastal By-law and other local regulations designed to ensure everyone has the best experience when exploring the city. You’ll find easy-to-read signs at every beach explaining what’s allowed, so take a moment to check them when you arrive.

What’s a definite “no” on the beach?

According to Chapter 4 of the Coastal By-law, here are some key things to remember:

· No fires, fireworks, or Chinese lanterns on the beach.

· No motorised boats or jet skis within 100 metres of swimmers or within 100 m of the low-water mark in a bathing area

· No fishing in tidal pools or close to bathing areas (within 100 metres).

· No overnight camping or closed shelters.

· No loudspeakers, amplifiers, or similar equipment. If found, the equipment will be confiscated.

· No alcohol or drugs

· You are not allowed to bathe, dive, snorkel, or play within 50 m of/ near a jetty or designated public launch site.

· No hawking or unauthorised performances

Anyone breaking these by-laws can face fines ranging between R500-R2500, and any illegal goods will be confiscated. You can read the full Coastal By-law here.

Water Safety: Be Smart in the Surf

Cape Town’s beaches are stunning, but the ocean can be unpredictable. That’s why the City’s Recreation and Parks Department runs a year-round Drowning Prevention Programme. Lifeguards are stationed at 29 beaches, tidal pools, and popular coastal spots during the busy summer months.

Here are the top four tips to remember at the beach or when swimming:

· Swim only where lifeguards are on duty and always look for the red and yellow flags marking the safest bathing areas.

· Watch out for rip currents.

· Never swim if you have consumed alcohol.

· Always actively monitor children in and around water

So, What Can You Do?

Plan ahead: Check which beaches have lifeguards on duty.

Pack wisely: Sunscreen, water, and snacks.

Respect the rules: They’re there for everyone’s protection.

Be mindful of others: A little courtesy goes a long way in keeping our beaches enjoyable for all.

Sam Smith Recalls Getting Liposuction at 13 After Being Teased at School

Sam Smith is opening up getting liposuction at age 13 — and why it turned into a “nightmare.”

The Grammy winner, who uses they/them pronouns, spoke about the experience on the Wednesday, November 5, episode of the “Podcrushed” podcast hosted by Penn Badgley, Sophie Ansari and Nava Kavelin.

Smith, 33, said they struggled with their weight and felt self-conscious about their body while in high school, leading to them seeking surgery.

“For me, it was always my weight. My weight was the hardest thing for me in school, and weirdly the thing I probably got teased the most about,” Smith said on the podcast.

“I had surgery on my chest when I was 13 years old because I had a growing chest,” the “I’m Not the Only One” singer continued. “There was all sorts of reasons why, but mainly that I was just getting so teased. I couldn’t go swimming in school, and getting changed in the locker room was hell. So I got liposuction when I was 13 years old.”

Host Badgley, 39, then asked how Smith’s parents reacted when they said they wanted to go under the knife.

“They were supportive,” Smith responded. “They were hugely supportive of the whole thing because they saw how much it was crippling everything about me.”

Smith said that despite undergoing liposuction, they continued to struggle with their weight and relationship with food.

“It was all a struggle with food and stuff, and the liposuction, it worked, but it was also a nightmare,” they said. “Because they gave me a bandage which is like a bra … I was only meant to wear it for a month, but if I wore the bandage, it meant that I would get to the front of the lunch queue because everyone had to be sensitive about my chest. So I just kept this bandage on for nearly a year.”

“I’d be like, ‘Ooh, don’t come close to me,’ and I’d get first in the lunch queue, and I’d just eat more and eat more,” Smith continued. “So the surgery never really worked because I just love food.”

Smith previously opened up about having liposuction as a teenager in an interview with Jameela Jamil for the Good Place actress’ I Weigh Instagram series in 2019.

“When I was a kid, I was chubby … and then it would get worse and worse and worse, and I was holding a lot of weight in my chest. When I hit 11 years old, I went to the doctor,” the “Unholy” singer said at the time. “I was so self-conscious that it was affecting my mood every day and my life as a teenager.”

“At the time, I think I was very happy about it. It didn’t really change anything,” they continued. “I think I put the weight back on in two weeks because I hadn’t figured out my relationship with food, so it didn’t really change anything. But being 12 years old and having liposuction on your chest is quite a big deal.”

In a January 2023 interview with The Sunday Times, Smith said they’d finally learned to overcome their body dysmorphia after years of insecurities about their physical appearance.

“When I was 25 I came off tour exhausted. I looked to role models in the body world. Every time I went to the pool I felt self-conscious, but I forced myself to take my top off,” they said. “It paid off because I now have the opposite of body dysmorphia. I look fabulous. I’m finally getting a tan. I’m burnt in places I’ve never been burnt.”
