UNICAF University lauded for filling Malawi’s 3% tertiary education gap

LILONGWE (MaraviPost)-One of the country’s leading online higher learning institutions UNICAF University on Thursday, August 3, 2023, graduated 444 out of 9,800 learners still studying various faculties at the institution.

Vice Chancellor for the University, Robert Ridley told The Maravi Post in an interview after the fourth graduation ceremony at Bingu International Convention Center (BICC) that this year 22 students managed to graduate with PHD regardless of the institution being new in the industry.

Ridley said 40 percent of the students are from other countries including refugees from Sudan while the other 40 percent are Malawians.

He, therefore, emphasized the need for the country to develop its own researchers and well-knowledgeable people through affordable and manageable online learning.

In her remarks, Minister of Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Willima lauded UNICAF for helping the government to fill the 3 percent gap in tertiary education.

Willima said private universities are playing a big role in accommodating students that did not make it to government universities as well as those that are upgrading their studies.

Unicaf University is accredited to offer online studies in countries including Malawi, Zambia, Uganda, Zimbabwe, and Kenya.

Unicaf University in Malawi is accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), and Unicaf University in Zambia is accredited by the Higher Education Authority (HEA).

Unicaf University pairs with UK’s Suffolk University to offer public health degree program

 

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Unicaf University international proudly has established a new partnership with the University of Suffolkin the UK.Under the partnership,

Unicaf will be a global delivery partner of the University of Suffolk, UK, which recruits, admits, enrolls and supports online learners to University awards approved for distance online delivery.

Under the partnership, on successful completion, graduates will receive a University of Suffolk award.

The new Unicaf University partner institution is a transformation university, drawing from the best of UK university education traditions and aligning them with the demands and challenges of the 21st Century.

The partnership focuses on employment and entrepreneurship while changing lives through higher education.

The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Helen Langton expressed gratitude over the partnership saying will provide online education internationally.

‘The University of Suffolk continues to reach out to those for whom access to higher education can be challenging, as we know how important transformation education can be for individuals and communities.

“Offering online access to our courses is one way to continue this work and our partnership will enable this to happen.This is an exciting opportunity that will also help us further develop the reputation of both the University and our region internationally”, he added.

Speaking on behalf of Unicaf, the organization’s Chief Academic Officer Dr. Kevin Andrews said was pleased with the partnership  saying its such an energized, young and forward looking institution.

“Unicaf has already made a positive impact in a region of the UK where access to higher education was challenging. Together we can extend that impact internationally,” delighted Dr. Andrews.

The MSc in Public Health is the first of a number of University of Suffolk degree programmes that will soon be made available through online delivery via Unicaf online platform.

This programme was selected to inaugurate the partnership with the University of Suffolk, because it is of significant relevance to the communities Unicaf serves in Africa and around the world.

A challenging and rewarding programme, this Master’s degree is designed to provide a comprehensive insight to public health for students who wish to pursue careers as public health practitioners, managers or researchers at the local, national,continental and international levels.

The core focus of the programme is on improving the health and well-being of populations, preventing health problems and reducing inequalities in healthcare provision.

It imparts cutting-edge knowledge and skills in the principles and methods employed in public health and explores a broad range of contemporary public health issues, supported by leading experts in the field; it also provides opportunities for the exchange of experiences amongst students from different public health systems around the world.

This programme is designed for modern public health practitioners, from epidemiologists, to health promoters, community leaders or researchers. 

Unicaf University Malawi deputy vice chancellor Dr Robert Ridley said that through the partnership, students will be able to study towards the University of Suffolk MSc in Public Health degree programme taking advantage of the generous Unicaf scholarship programme.

Ridley added that the partnership is good for the improvement of Malawi’s health sector.

 

 

 

 

 

Unicaf University donates assorted items to Lilongwe’s Deayang Luke hospital as part of World Health Day


UNICAF UNIVERSITY DONATE VARIOUS ITEMS TO DEAYANG LUKE HOSPITAL AS PART OF WORLD HEALTH DAY

 

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Unicaf University Malawi, a pan African tertiary education provider has donated items to Deayang Hospital worthy MK515, 000 as part of World Health Day which is commemorated on  April 7, 2019.

This is a special day that is set aside by United Nation and World Health Organization to raise awareness and understanding about health issues and to mobilize support for action from local community to international stage.

The University visited the Pediatric and maternity wards and donated items like Blankets, nappies, soap and zitenje to 50 patients.

Deayang Luke Hospital is located in Lilongwe and it serves as one of the   Best     hospitals that provides quality health services to those who otherwise would have lacked access to medical benefits; however the hospital finds it hard to meet all the basic needs of the patients.

Speaking during the ceremony; Unicaf University Malawi Pro Vice Chancellor,  Buxton Mpando said that the university saw it necessary to assist those in hospital as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.

According to Mpando; UNICAF University aims at giving back to the community in different ways and is hopeful that the donation will make a significant stride to the recipients.

Speaking during the function; Vice Matron for the Hospital, Angeline Edwin said the donation has come at a right time as many patients who comes to the hospital lacks many things.

She recommended Unicaf University for the donation and encouraged the university to continue so that many people should be reached.

Unicaf University students played a crucial role to make this donation a success. All 50 patients were grateful for this kind gesture.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Unicaf University Malawi is hosting a festive Braai on Saturday, December 15, from 12:30 noon until 18:00 in the evening, at the University campus in Lilongwe.

In a brief statement released and made available to the Maravi Post, Marketing and Business Development Manager for Unicaf University Miller John Joshua said  participants will Join fellow students and graduates in a celebration of friendship, eat delicious food and enjoy live music concert by favourite artist Skeffa Chimoto.

Joshua disclosed that one of Skeffa Chimoto’s management team members Levison Msakambewa confirmed the band’s performance

“The artist is geared to offer the best to students and all his fans and encouraged those in doubt to come and end the year 2018 in style.

“Entrance to the festive Braai event is free for all our students and graduates, and Unicaf University staff volunteers will be cooking barbecue delicacies and serving refreshments to all,” said Joshua .

He adds, “This is a unique opportunity for the Unicaf University Malawi family to come together, to socialize, and enjoy a great music show!

“This will be a rear opportunity to meet face to face, with student adviser, tutors and other University staff since 60% of the tutorials are done online”.

Dr Robert Ridley appointed Unicaf University Malawi’s Deputy Vice Chancellor

 

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Dr Robert Ridley has been appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor at Unicaf University Malawi.

In a press statement made available to The Maravi Post on Friday, Dr Ridley’s multi-faceted career spans the sectors of academia, industry, international public health and diplomacy.

He has served as Vice-Chancellor at Mzuzu University in Malawi from March 2013 to July 2017.

He was previously Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Malawi.

His academic expertise covers malaria drug and vaccine research, public health, public private partnerships and innovation. He has authored over 100 scientific publications and has generated several patents.

Following an honours degree at Cambridge University and a Doctorate degree at Wolverhampton in England, Dr Ridley held academic positions at Chancellor College at the University of Malawi, McMaster University in Canada and Edinburgh University in Scotland between the years 1980 to 1992.

 

From 1992 to 1998 he was a Vice-Director at F. Hoffmann-La Roche pharmaceutical company in Switzerland, heading their malaria drug discovery programme.

In 1999 he was instrumental in establishing the Medicines for Malaria Venture, an international public private partnership, linking university academics to pharmaceutical companies through the provision of research grants for the discovery and development of antimalarial drugs.

He served there as Acting Chief Executive Officer and as Chief Scientific Officer.

In 2002 he joined the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) at the World Health Organization in Geneva, where he was Director from 2004 to 2011.

The work of the Special Programme focuses on the provision of research grants and capacity building in developing countries at the interface of university research, evidence, policy and implementation.

Speaking about his new appointment Dr Ridley stated: “I look forward to working with Unicaf University to help strengthen the sustainable development of Malawi through quality higher education”.
