Kamangirah

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Some concerned citizens on Monday questioned the country’s Vice President who is also UTM Party leader Saulos Chilima’s remarks on quality of the running-mates the nation needs to look into ahead of this year’s May 21 polls.

Chilima on Saturday advised the Kasungu rally to check properly on running-mates saying some are not fit “of yes bwana (those that dont challenge their bosses on wrong decisions).

This has angered some citizens arguing that Leadership is not beauty contest, leadership is not about being young as most ill minded Malawians may think, leadership is not about hatred and anger, it takes integrity.

Addressing the news conference in the capital Lilongwe, the grouping’s chairperson Phillip Kamangirah, observed that UTM Leader to quickly tell Malawians as what was he interpreting when he insinuated words that would seem to be wishing for President Mutharika dead.

“As citizens we don’t condone any act of violence from any Political Party in this country, be it DPP, MCP, UTM, UDF, UMODZI PARTY and any other candidate aspiring for the highest office.

‘We need to protect this Peace, we need to wear a human face, we all need each other now, later and even after elections,” urges Kamangirah.

He challenged communities to vote into power able individuals, and  not out of sympathy.

Chilima reminded Malawians of former head of state Dr. Kamuzu Banda of his visionary leaders that promoted decent housing, clothes and food availability.

“Every place am visiting, the message is the same; lack of food, good road networks, poor education and health services in public facilities. This should agitate for Malawians for anger to have able individuals in power.

“With UTM Party leadership, all is set to bring back Malawi’s lost glory on agriculture, education standards where teachers will be paid handsomely and in time. We want Malawians to have three course meal. Therefore, everyone must vote put failed individuals to put UTM in power in May 21”, urges Chilima.

Misa Malawi’s presidential debates not favoring newly registered minority parties

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The much awaited Presidential debates which Media Institute of South Africa (Misa) Malawi is scheduled conduct from March 29 to April 5 ahead of this year’s May 21 tripartite elections like to sideline UTM Party leader Saulos Chilima, Casim Chilumpha of Tikonze Alliance and others as they do not five percent of the 193 seats in the 2014 Malawi Parliament as one of the requirements.

Other requirements for presidential candidates to take part including that the party or coalition party demonstrated and proven ability to field no less than 50% of candidates  in the member of Parliament election and ward consular election proportionally  distributed across all three regions of the country.

Addressing a news conference in Lilongwe on Monday, Misa-Malawi chairperson Tereza Ndanga said  that presidential debate will require candidates to full fill of eight requirements to qualify in taking part.

Ndanga said other requirement is that only candidate, party and coalition should have developed and publicly presented a policy platform or manifestos before the first debate.

She said the Presidential Debates gives Malawians an opportunity to examine presidential candidates before the polls on May 21, 2019.

“The debates, being organised by a multi-stakeholder taskforce, will be held at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) on March 29 and April 5, 2019 in both English and Chewa and moderated by a mature, professional and impartial Malawian,” she said.

The task force has also included representative of taxpayer-funded Malawi Broadcasting Corporation, private owned Zodiak TV and Times TV.

In his remarks, Times Media Group Editor-In-Chief George Kasakura said the requirements will ensure that they have serious contenders in the debate.

This will be the second time that the country is holding Presidential debates before the polls.

The first ever Presidential Debates were held during the country’s first Tripartite Elections in 2014.

The 2019 Debates Taskforce Force believes that the 2019 debates will create a platform for the candidates to openly debate and commit to addressing several policy issues which they will be made to account for once elected into office.

The public have welcomed the debates but have observed that the running mates should have their first showdown.
